**Andrew Howard** (born 12 June 1969) is a Welsh theatre, television and film actor.

## Early life

Andrew grew up in [Canton](/source/Canton%2C_Cardiff) and [Ely](/source/Ely%2C_Cardiff) districts of Cardiff.[1]

## Training

Howard trained at Cygnet Training Theatre in [Exeter](/source/Exeter) in the late 1980s, touring in productions of *A Christmas Carol*, *Twelfth Night*, *Beggar's Opera* and *Peer Gynt* among others.

## Career

### Stage

On stage roles included Alex DeLarge in *A Clockwork Orange*,[2] Peer Gynt in *Peer Gynt*, Orestes in *Electra* at theatres, including The Royal National Theatre (London) and The Donmar Warehouse (London).

### Film

Howard has made notable appearances in several major productions, including the [HBO](/source/HBO) miniseries *[Band of Brothers](/source/Band_of_Brothers_(TV_miniseries))* and the [Guy Ritchie](/source/Guy_Ritchie) caper *[Revolver](/source/Revolver_(2005_film))*, as well as costarring alongside [Patrick Stewart](/source/Patrick_Stewart) and [Glenn Close](/source/Glenn_Close) in the 2003 TV film *[The Lion in Winter](/source/The_Lion_in_Winter_(2003_film))*.[3] He played "Bad" Frank Phillips in [History Channel](/source/History_(U.S._TV_channel))'s *[Hatfields & McCoys](/source/Hatfields_%26_McCoys_(miniseries))*.[4]

In 2001, Howard was awarded best actor at the [Tokyo International Film Festival](/source/Tokyo_International_Film_Festival) for his portrayal of Jon in *[Mr In-Between](/source/Mr_In-Between)*.[5] He co-wrote the screenplay for *[Shooters](/source/Shooters_(2002_film))*, a 2002 British [crime drama](/source/Crime_drama) in which he also starred.[3] In 2009, he played Thomas Luster in the [thriller film](/source/Thriller_film) *Luster* under the direction from Adam Mason.[6]

In 2009, he was also in the film *[Blood River](/source/Blood_River_(2009_film))*,[7] for which Howard won Best Actor Award at the [Honolulu](/source/Honolulu) Film Festival and the Jack Nance Breakthrough Performance Award at the [New York Film Festival Downtown](/source/New_York_Film_Festival_Downtown). In 2011, he starred in *[Limitless](/source/Limitless_(film))*, a film by [Neil Burger](/source/Neil_Burger) originally titled *The Dark Fields*.[8]

In 2014, he played a supporting role as the lead Russian henchman, Maxim, in *[Taken 3](/source/Taken_3)*.[2] Since 2015, he has appeared in the television series *[Bates Motel](/source/Bates_Motel_(TV_series))* as Will Decody, who was originally portrayed by actor [Ian Hart](/source/Ian_Hart) in the first season.[9]

In 2020, he played Stephen in *[Tenet](/source/Tenet)*. In the same year, he starred as Officer Merk, a racist [NYPD](/source/New_York_City_Police_Department) officer, in the Oscar-winning short film *[Two Distant Strangers](/source/Two_Distant_Strangers)*.
