**Andrew Havill** (born 1 June 1965) is a British actor. Havill has appeared in more than 40 films and 50 plays beginning in the late 1980s. After training in [Oxford](/source/Oxford) and London,[1] he began his career in [repertory theatre](/source/Repertory_theatre) in 1989 and made his screen debut in 1993. As a [character actor](/source/Character_actor), Havill has appeared in many British [costume dramas](/source/Historical_drama).[2]

## Education

Havill attended the [University of Exeter](/source/University_of_Exeter), where he read English and drama.[3] He spent four years with the [National Youth Theatre of Great Britain](/source/National_Youth_Theatre_of_Great_Britain) with roles in London theatre productions including *For Those in Peril* at the [Shaw Theatre](/source/Shaw_Theatre), *[As You Like It](/source/As_You_Like_It)* at the [Open Air Theatre](/source/Open_Air_Theatre) in Regent's Park, and *[Reynard the Fox](/source/Reynard_the_Fox)* on the Drum Theatre Plymouth and south-west tour. At the [Jeanetta Cochrane Theatre](/source/Cochrane_Theatre), Havill appeared in [*Henry V*](/source/Henry_V_(play)), *[Twelfth Night](/source/Twelfth_Night)*, and *A Proper Place*. ## Career

### Theatre

Havill began his career with the [Royal Shakespeare Company](/source/Royal_Shakespeare_Company) (RSC). In 1989, he portrayed [Lysander](/source/Lysander_(A_Midsummer_Night's_Dream)) at the [Royal Shakespeare Theatre](/source/Royal_Shakespeare_Theatre)'s production of *[A Midsummer Night's Dream](/source/A_Midsummer_Night's_Dream)*[5] and Reynaldo at the [Barbican Theatre](/source/Barbican_Theatre)'s production of *[Hamlet](/source/Hamlet)*. He appeared in the [Fortune Theatre](/source/Fortune_Theatre)'s productions of *[The Woman in Black](/source/The_Woman_in_Black_(play))* in 1989 and 1996.[6]

Throughout the 1990s, Havill performed in a number of plays at London's West End and elsewhere. He portrayed several characters at the [Barbican Theatre](/source/Barbican_Centre) in an RSC production of *[A Clockwork Orange](/source/A_Clockwork_Orange_(film))* and at The Pit London in *[A Woman of No Importance](/source/A_Woman_of_No_Importance)*.[5] In conjunction with the RSC, Havill's focus was Shakespeare; in 1990, he portrayed George Seacoal in *[Much Ado About Nothing](/source/Much_Ado_About_Nothing)*, Peter Arnold in *Two Shakespearean Actors* and The Merchant in *[The Comedy of Errors](/source/The_Comedy_of_Errors)*; from 1991 to 1992, he portrayed [Sir William Bagot](/source/William_Bagot_(politician)) in an RSC production of [Richard II](/source/Richard_II_(play)) at the Barbican Theatre in London.[4]

In 2003, Havill played Group Captain Windbreak in Justin Butcher's production of *The Madness of George Dubya* at the [Arts Theatre](/source/Arts_Theatre) in London. [Michael Billington](/source/Michael_Billington_(critic)) wrote in *[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian)* that "Butcher's production... has a surprising jauntiness; ... Andrew Havill as an ineffectual group captain... stand[s] out."[7] The following year, Havill was cast as the Reverend James Morell in [George Bernard Shaw](/source/George_Bernard_Shaw)'s *[Candida](/source/Candida_(play))*, for which *The Guardian*'s [Lyn Gardner](/source/Lyn_Gardner) wrote "Much of the pleasure of Christopher Luscombe's well-observed period production is in watching Andrew Havill's interesting Morell move from confident self-belief to bewildered self-doubt as he starts to understand that even goodness is a form of selfishness."[8] Havill's other stage roles of the 2000s include working with [Alan Ayckbourn](/source/Alan_Ayckbourn) on his play *Virtual Reality*, a West End production of [Jean Anouilh](/source/Jean_Anouilh)'s *[Ring Around the Moon](/source/Ring_Round_the_Moon)*, and roles in director Chris Luscombe's productions of *[The Comedy of Errors](/source/The_Comedy_of_Errors)* and *[The Merry Wives of Windsor](/source/The_Merry_Wives_of_Windsor)* at [Shakespeare's Globe](/source/Shakespeare's_Globe). Of the latter, Gardner wrote "Havill's comic timing is a joy."[9]

Havill also appeared as Frank Ford in *The Merry Wives of Windsor* US tour of 2010. [Ben Brantley](/source/Ben_Brantley) commented in *[The New York Times](/source/The_New_York_Times)*, "As Ford... the excellent Mr. Havill is exactly as serious as he needs to be, reminding us that one of comedy’s main functions is to defuse bombs that in real life often explode and destroy."[10] In 2012 and 2013, he was part of the original cast of James Graham's play *[This House](/source/This_House_(play))*, at the [National Theatre](/source/Royal_National_Theatre), directed by [Jeremy Herrin](/source/Jeremy_Herrin).[11] His work has included three roles at Hampstead Theatre in the plays *Farewell to the Theatre*, *[Drawing the Line](/source/Drawing_the_Line_(play))*, and *Wonderland*,[12] and a portrayal of the English physician Sir Gilbert Wedgecroft in a [National Theatre](/source/Royal_National_Theatre) production of [*Waste*](/source/Waste_(play)), with Anne Cox writing "Havill offers excellent support... as always."[13] In 2019, Havill portrayed [Warren Lewis](/source/Warren_Lewis) at the [Chichester Festival Theatre](/source/Chichester_Festival_Theatre)'s production of [*Shadowlands*](/source/Shadowlands_(play)) opposite actors [Liz White](/source/Liz_White_(actress)) and [Hugh Bonneville](/source/Hugh_Bonneville),[14] having appeared with Bonneville in the *[Downton Abbey](/source/Downton_Abbey_(film))* film of the same year.[15]

### Television

Havill made his television debut in [Lucy Gannon](/source/Lucy_Gannon)'s *[Soldier Soldier](/source/Soldier_Soldier)* in 1993, followed by a portrayal of English critic [John Davenport](/source/John_Davenport_(critic)) in *[The House of Elliot](/source/The_House_of_Elliot)* Series 3 the following year.[16] From 1997 to 1998, Havill worked with [Lynda La Plante](/source/Lynda_La_Plante) on her drama series *[Trial & Retribution](/source/Trial_%26_Retribution)*, playing Clarence Oxley on *Trial & Retribution I* and Crispin Oxley on *Trial & Retribution II*. Havill starred in two 1999 television mini series: *[Aristocrats](/source/Aristocrats_(TV_series))* and *[Wives and Daughters](/source/Wives_and_Daughters_(1999_TV_series))* as [Charles Bunbury](/source/Sir_Charles_Bunbury%2C_8th_Baronet) and Sir Charles Morton respectively.[17][18]

In the 2000s, his television roles included portraying Manet on *[The Impressionists](/source/The_Impressionists_(BBC_drama))*, *[Elizabeth David](/source/Elizabeth_David%3A_A_Life_in_Recipes)* (in which he featured as the husband of cookery writer [Elizabeth David](/source/Elizabeth_David) in the docudrama after whom it was named),[19] and *[Daphne](/source/Daphne_(2007_film))*. He played the Chief Steward in the Christmas *[Doctor Who](/source/Doctor_Who)* episode "[Voyage of the Damned](/source/Voyage_of_the_Damned_(Doctor_Who))"[20] and was in the BBC drama *[Spooks](/source/Spooks_(TV_series))* Series 8.[21][22]

In 2011, Havill portrayed the Reverend Conrad Walker on ITV's *[Midsomer Murders](/source/Midsomer_Murders)* (in the episode *The Night of the Stag*). In 2012, he was cast as the Royal Equerry, Harry, in the episode *[A Scandal in Belgravia](/source/A_Scandal_in_Belgravia)* of the mystery crime drama *[Sherlock](/source/Sherlock_(TV_series))* due to his reputation for playing "well-spoken upper-class types."[23] His work of the 2010s includes playing Victor McKinley on the BBC's *[Father Brown](/source/Father_Brown_(2013_TV_series))*, Edward Sidwell on *[The Coroner](/source/The_Coroner_(TV_series))* Series 1, episode 8 (*Napoleon's Violin*), and Gareth Anderson on *[Vera](/source/Vera_(TV_series))* (in the episode *Natural Selection*) in 2017.[21]

Havill played factory owner Douglas Broome in the 2021 series *[The Nevers](/source/The_Nevers)*,[24] and Professor Lucius Stamfield in *[Endeavour](/source/Endeavour_(TV_series))* of the same year. In the [fifth](/source/The_Crown_(season_5)) and [sixth](/source/The_Crown_(season_6)) seasons of *[The Crown](/source/The_Crown_(TV_series))*, he portrayed [Robert Fellowes](/source/Robert_Fellowes%2C_Baron_Fellowes), the Queen's private secretary and brother-in-law of [Princess Diana](/source/Diana%2C_Princess_of_Wales).
