# Andrew Becher

[Major-General](/source/Major-general_(United_Kingdom)) **Andrew Cracroft Becher** (26 August 1858 – 11 May 1929) was a senior [British Army](/source/British_Army) officer.

## Military career

Educated at [Rugby School](/source/Rugby_School), Becher was commissioned into the [Royal Scots](/source/Royal_Scots) on 30 January 1878.[1] After service with the [Norfolk Regiment](/source/Royal_Norfolk_Regiment) in [South Africa](/source/South_Africa), he became commander of the [2nd Lothian Volunteer Infantry Brigade](/source/Forth_Brigade) in March 1907[2] and commander of the [Durham Light Infantry Brigade](/source/151st_(Durham_Light_Infantry)_Brigade) in 1908.[3] He went on to be General Officer Commanding [63rd (2nd Northumbrian) Division](/source/63rd_(2nd_Northumbrian)_Division) in 1914 and commander of the [Southern Command](/source/Southern_Command_(United_Kingdom)) Depot in [Sutton Coldfield](/source/Sutton_Coldfield) in 1916.[4]

## Family

In 1883 he married Frances Maude Johnson; they had one son and two daughters.[4] Following the death of his first wife he married Elisabeth Dalyell Stewart in 1907; they had three sons.[4]
