**Andrei Suslin** ([Russian](/source/Russian_language): Андре́й Алекса́ндрович Су́слин, sometimes transliterated **Souslin**) was a Russian [mathematician](/source/Mathematician) who contributed to [algebraic K-theory](/source/Algebraic_K-theory) and its connections with [algebraic geometry](/source/Algebraic_geometry). He was a Trustee Chair and Professor of mathematics at [Northwestern University](/source/Northwestern_University).[1]

He was born on 27 December 1950 in [St. Petersburg](/source/St._Petersburg), [Russia](/source/Russia). As a youth, he was an "all Leningrad" gymnast.[2] He received his PhD from [Leningrad University](/source/Leningrad_University) in 1974; his thesis was titled *Projective modules over polynomial rings*.[3]

In 1976 he and [Daniel Quillen](/source/Daniel_Quillen) independently proved [Serre's conjecture](/source/Quillen%E2%80%93Suslin_theorem) about the triviality of algebraic [vector bundles](/source/Vector_bundle) on [affine space](/source/Affine_space).

In 1982 he and [Alexander Merkurjev](/source/Alexander_Merkurjev) proved the [Merkurjev–Suslin theorem](/source/Merkurjev%E2%80%93Suslin_theorem) on the norm residue homomorphism in Milnor K2-theory, with applications to the [Brauer group](/source/Brauer_group).

Suslin was an [invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians](/source/List_of_International_Congresses_of_Mathematicians_Plenary_and_Invited_Speakers) in 1978 and 1994, and he gave a plenary invited address at the Congress in 1986. He was awarded the [Frank Nelson Cole Prize](/source/Cole_Prize) in Algebra in 2000 by the [American Mathematical Society](/source/American_Mathematical_Society) for his work on [motivic cohomology](/source/Motivic_cohomology).[4]

In 2010 special issues of *Journal of K-theory*[5] and of *Documenta Mathematica* [6] have been published in honour of his 60th birthday.

He died in July 2018.[7]
