Biblical city

For other uses, see [Anab (disambiguation)](/source/Anab_(disambiguation)).

**Anab** ([Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language): עֲנָב, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Hebrew): *‘Ǎnāḇ*, *Anav*) is a city mentioned in the [Hebrew Bible](/source/Hebrew_Bible). It is mentioned in the [Book of Joshua](/source/Book_of_Joshua) as one of the cities in the [Judaean Mountains](/source/Judaean_Mountains) from which [Joshua](/source/Joshua) expelled the [Anakim](/source/Anakim).[1]

## In the Hebrew Bible

Anav is mentioned in [Joshua 11](/source/Joshua_11):21:

At that time, Joshua went and wiped out the Anakites from the hill country, from [Hebron](/source/Hebron), [Debir](/source/Debir), and Anab, from the entire hill country of [Judah](/source/Tribe_of_Judah), and from the entire hill country of Israel; Joshua proscribed them and their towns.[2]

Later, [Joshua 15](/source/Joshua_15):50 lists Anav as one of several sites incorporated into the hilly parts of the territory of the Tribe of Judah.

## In later sources

Anab was mentioned in a Jewish document, written in [Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language), self-dated to the "4th year after the destruction of the house of Israel", which scholars put at 140 CE, four years after the Roman suppression of the [Bar Kokhba revolt](/source/Bar_Kokhba_revolt).[3]

## Archeology

[31°24′14″N 34°56′40″E / 31.403832°N 34.944334°E / 31.403832; 34.944334](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Anab&params=31.403832_N_34.944334_E_region:IL)Anav is identified with today's [Khirbet Anab](/source/Khirbet_Anab).[4] It lies among the [Hebron Hills](/source/Hebron_Hills), 10 mi (16 km) south-south-west of [Hebron](/source/Hebron), in the [West Bank](/source/West_Bank).

['Anab al-Kabir](/source/'Anab_al-Kabir) used to be a sizeable village with 60 tax-payers, as noted by Hütteroth and Abdulfattah. The cause of its destruction remains unknown. Currently, it is occupied by [Bedouins](/source/Bedouin) from the Ramad'in tribe, who likely settled there during the [Jordanian control of the West Bank](/source/Jordanian_annexation_of_the_West_Bank) (1948–1967).[5]

A [basilical-shaped](/source/Basilica) church with [Greek](/source/Greek_language) and [Christian Palestinian Aramaic](/source/Christian_Palestinian_Aramaic) inscriptions was found at the site. The entire complex is 38 x 20 meters. [Mosaic](/source/Mosaic) floors were discovered throughout the site; they suffered [iconoclastic](/source/Iconoclasm) destruction during the [early Islamic period](/source/Bilad_al-Sham) (c. 8th century CE). The rooms of the complex were used for habitation during the [Mamluk](/source/Mamluk_Sultanate) period in the 13th and 14th centuries.[6]
