**An Na** (born 1972) is a [South Korea](/source/South_Korea)-born[1] [American](/source/American_people) [children's book](/source/Children's_books) author. She gained success with her first novel *[A Step From Heaven](/source/A_Step_From_Heaven)*, published by [Front Street Press](/source/Casemate_Publishers) in 2001, which won the annual [Michael L. Printz Award](/source/Michael_L._Printz_Award) from the [American Library Association](/source/American_Library_Association) recognizing the year's "best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit".[2] It was also a finalist for the [National Book Award](/source/National_Book_Award), [Young People's Literature](/source/National_Book_Award_for_Young_People's_Literature), and later found its way onto numerous "best book" lists.

## Life

Na grew up in [San Diego](/source/San_Diego), [California](/source/California),[1] and has a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) from [Amherst College](/source/Amherst_College).[3][4] Starting her career as a middle school English and History teacher, Na turned to writing novels after taking a young adult literature class while enrolled in an M.F.A. program at [Vermont College of Fine Arts](/source/Vermont_College_of_Fine_Arts). She divides her time between [Oakland, California](/source/Oakland%2C_California) and [Warren, Vermont](/source/Warren%2C_Vermont), and makes frequent visits to middle schools to talk about her works and encourages young [Asian-American](/source/Asian-American) students to become artists and harness their creativity.
