# Amyotrophy

**Amyotrophy** is progressive wasting of [muscle](/source/Muscle) tissues. Muscle pain is also a symptom. It can occur in middle-aged males with [type 2 diabetes](/source/Type_2_diabetes). It also occurs with [motor neuron disease](/source/Motor_neuron_disease).

## Differential diagnosis

The following are considered [differential diagnosis](/source/Differential_diagnosis) for amyotrophy:[1]

- compressive and infective causes of polyradiculopathy
- structural disc diseases
- chronic demyelinating neuropathies
