**Amir Saipi**[a] (born 8 July 2000) is a professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays as a [goalkeeper](/source/Goalkeeper_(association_football)) for Swiss club [Lugano](/source/FC_Lugano). Born in Switzerland, he represents [Kosovo](/source/Kosovo_national_football_team) at international level.

## Club career

### Lugano

On 10 September 2021, Saipi signed a five-year contract with [Swiss Super League](/source/Swiss_Super_League) club [Lugano](/source/FC_Lugano) and receiving squad number 26.[2] Two days later, he was named as a first team substitute for the first time in a league match against [Basel](/source/FC_Basel).[3] His debut with Lugano came five days later in the [2021–22 Swiss Cup second round](/source/2021%E2%80%9322_Swiss_Cup#Round_2) against [Neuchâtel Xamax](/source/Neuch%C3%A2tel_Xamax_FCS) after being named in the starting line-up.[4] On 24 October 2021, he made his league debut in a 2–0 away defeat again against [Basel](/source/FC_Basel) after being named in the starting line-up.[5]

## International career

### Under-20 and proposed Kosovo switch

Saipi in 2019 was part of the [Switzerland U20](/source/Switzerland_national_under-20_football_team) with which he played four matches where most of them were [friendly matches](/source/Exhibition_game#Association_football). On 26 August 2019, the [Football Federation of Kosovo](/source/Football_Federation_of_Kosovo) announced that they had held a meeting with Saipi and were very close to starting the procedures of equipping him with the necessary documents to be ready to join [Kosovo](/source/Kosovo_national_football_team) for the friendly match against [Gibraltar](/source/Gibraltar_national_football_team) and [UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying](/source/UEFA_Euro_2020_qualifying_Group_A) match against [Montenegro](/source/Montenegro_national_football_team).[6]

### Under-21

On 2 October 2020, Saipi received a call-up from [Switzerland U21](/source/Switzerland_national_under-21_football_team) for the [2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification](/source/2021_UEFA_European_Under-21_Championship_qualification_Group_2) matches against [Georgia U21](/source/Georgia_national_under-21_football_team) and [Liechtenstein U21](/source/Liechtenstein_national_under-21_football_team).[7] On 30 May 2021, he made his debut with Switzerland U21 in a friendly match against [Republic of Ireland U21](/source/Republic_of_Ireland_national_under-21_football_team) after being named in the starting line-up.[8]

On 15 June 2023, Saipi was named to the Switzerland U21 squad for the [2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship](/source/2023_UEFA_European_Under-21_Championship), where he played in four matches, including the quarterfinal against [Spain](/source/Spain_national_under-21_football_team), in which they were eliminated 1–2 after extra time.[9]

### Senior

On 29 September 2024, it was announced by [Corriere del Ticino](/source/Corriere_del_Ticino) that Saipi has decided to represent Kosovo at the international level.[10] Five days later, he formalizes the decision and accept their call-up for the [2024–25 UEFA Nations League](/source/2024%E2%80%9325_UEFA_Nations_League_C#Group_2) matches against [Lithuania](/source/Lithuania_national_football_team) and [Cyprus](/source/Cyprus_national_football_team).[11] His debut with Kosovo came on 12 October in the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League match against Lithuania after being named in the starting line-up.[12]

## Personal life

Saipi was born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland to Bosniak parents from the village [Lubinjë e Epërme](https://sq.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lubinj%C3%AB_e_Ep%C3%ABrme) of [Prizren](/source/Prizren).[1]
