**Ami Louise Metcalf** (born June 1994) is an English actress. She rose to prominence in 2010 after portraying [Sapphire Cox](/source/Sapphire_Cox) in the [BBC](/source/BBC) soap opera *[Doctors](/source/Doctors_(2000_TV_series))*, for which she won the [Best Dramatic Performance from a Young Actor or Actress](/source/Best_Dramatic_Performance_from_a_Young_Actor_or_Actress). Following *Doctors*, she has appeared in various projects including the BBC drama series *[Upstairs Downstairs](/source/Upstairs_Downstairs_(2010_TV_series))*, the [Channel 4](/source/Channel_4) sitcom *[The Mimic](/source/The_Mimic_(TV_series))* and the [BBC Radio 4](/source/BBC_Radio_4) series *[Home Front](/source/Home_Front_(BBC_radio_series))*. Since 2022, she has starred in the [Britbox](/source/Britbox) series *[Sister Boniface Mysteries](/source/Sister_Boniface_Mysteries)* as Peggy Button.

## Life and career

Metcalf was born in June 1994 in [Lewisham](/source/Lewisham), London.[1][2] She was raised there by her single mother who worked as a teaching assistant.[3] In 2004, aged ten, Metcalf made her stage debut in a production of *[The Wind in the Willows](/source/The_Wind_in_the_Willows_(2016_musical))* at the [Open Air Theatre, Barra Hall Park](/source/Open_Air_Theatre%2C_Barra_Hall_Park).[4] In 2006, aged twelve, Metcalf made her screen debut in a voice role for two episodes of the children's series *[The Owl](/source/The_Owl_(TV_series))*.[5] Metcalf quit studying for her [A-levels](/source/A-level_(United_Kingdom)) to focus on acting full-time.[3]

In 2010, she was cast in the [BBC](/source/BBC) medical soap opera *[Doctors](/source/Doctors_(2000_TV_series))* as [Sapphire Cox](/source/Sapphire_Cox).[3] Appearing in a recurring role for 15 episodes, she portrayed a teenager addicted to [methadone](/source/Methadone) who is taken in by established character [Lily Hassan](/source/Lily_Hassan) ([Seeta Indrani](/source/Seeta_Indrani)).[6] For her portrayal of Sapphire, Metcalf won the [Best Dramatic Performance from a Young Actor or Actress](/source/Best_Dramatic_Performance_from_a_Young_Actor_or_Actress) at the [2010 British Soap Awards](/source/2010_British_Soap_Awards).[7] Later in 2010, she portrayed a younger version of [Kathy Burke](/source/Kathy_Burke) in an episode of the [Sky1](/source/Sky1) series *[Little Crackers](/source/Little_Crackers)*. Impressed with her portrayal, producers cast Metcalf in a main role in a spin-off series for the programme, *Walking and Talking*, in 2012.[3] Also in 2010, she starred in the BBC period drama *[Upstairs Downstairs](/source/Upstairs_Downstairs_(2010_TV_series))* as [Eunice McCabe](/source/List_of_Upstairs_Downstairs_(2010_TV_series)_characters#Eunice_McCabe) and appeared in the [2012 Christmas special](/source/List_of_Call_the_Midwife_episodes#ep7) of *[Call the Midwife](/source/Call_the_Midwife)*.[3][8]

From 2013 to 2014, she starred in the [Channel 4](/source/Channel_4) sitcom *[The Mimic](/source/The_Mimic_(TV_series))* as Helen Smith.[9] Then in 2014, she began voicing Kitty Lumley in the [BBC Radio 4](/source/BBC_Radio_4) period drama series *[Home Front](/source/Home_Front_(BBC_radio_series))*.[10] She voiced Kitty until 2018, appearing on eleven series of the programme.[11] Metcalf made her film debut in 2015 in the film *[Pan](/source/Pan_(2015_film))*, playing Sister Thomas.[12] In 2016, she appeared in two episodes of the BBC crime drama series *[Silent Witness](/source/Silent_Witness)* as Lisa Wilson.[13] In 2019, she returned to theatre, starring in a filmed production of *[Lady Windermere's Fan](/source/Lady_Windermere's_Fan)* at the [Vaudeville Theatre](/source/Vaudeville_Theatre).[14] A year later, she appeared in a [National Theatre Live](/source/National_Theatre_Live) production of *[A Midsummer Night's Dream](/source/A_Midsummer_Night's_Dream)* at the [Bridge Theatre](/source/Bridge_Theatre).[15]

2019 also saw Metcalf appear in an episode of the BBC period series *[Father Brown](/source/Father_Brown_(2013_TV_series))* as Alice Bonham.[16] A year later, she appeared in the [2020 Christmas special](/source/Birds_of_a_Feather_(TV_series)#2020_Christmas_special) of *[Birds of a Feather](/source/Birds_of_a_Feather_(TV_series))*.[17][18] Then, in 2022, Metcalf returned to the *Father Brown* [fictional universe](/source/Fictional_universe) when she was cast in the main role of Peggy Button in its spin-off series, *[Sister Boniface Mysteries](/source/Sister_Boniface_Mysteries)*.[19]
