**Amfilochia** ([Greek](/source/Greek_language): Αμφιλοχία) is a town and a municipality in the northwestern part of [Aetolia-Acarnania](/source/Aetolia-Acarnania) in [Greece](/source/Greece), on the site of [ancient](/source/Ancient_Greece) Amfilochia. Under the [Ottoman Empire](/source/Ottoman_Empire), it was known as **Karvasaras** (Καρβασαράς; **Kervansaray** in Turkish, from *[caravanserai](/source/Caravanserai)*).

Amfilochia is situated by the [Ambracian Gulf](/source/Ambracian_Gulf) and features an amphitheatre. Amfilochia dates back to the ancient times and also features the ancient cities of [Amphilochian Argos](/source/Amphilochian_Argos) and [Limnaia](/source/Limnaea_(Acarnania)) (or Limnaea).

## History

According to [Pausanias](/source/Pausanias_(geographer)), the settlement is named after king [Amphilochos](/source/Amphilochus_I_of_Argos), son of [Amphiaraus](/source/Amphiaraus). After the fall of [Troy](/source/Troy), Amphilochos settled in the area, which consequently was called Amphilochoi until the time of Pausanias.[2]

Under the Ottoman Empire, [Ali Pasha of Ioannina](/source/Ali_Pasha_of_Ioannina), forcibly relocated residents of another village to the current location of the town and established a motel (*serai* in Turkish) to serve passing caravans. This was how the name Karvasaras came up.[3]

In July 1944 a [battle](/source/Battle_of_Amfilochia) took place in the town between [ELAS](/source/ELAS) of the [Greek Resistance](/source/Greek_resistance) against the [occupation forces](/source/Axis_occupation_of_Greece) and their [local collaborators](/source/Security_Battalions), that resulted in victory for the Resistance.[4]
