Ambanja is located on the northern berth of the [Sambirano River](/source/Sambirano_River) and is crossed by the [Route Nationale 6](/source/Route_Nationale_6_(Madagascar)) ([Antsiranana](/source/Antsiranana) - [Mahajanga](/source/Mahajanga) and [Antananarivo](/source/Antananarivo)).<ref>Atlas Mondial, France Loisir, page 159</ref>

It is located at a road distance of 1 200&nbsp;km north of [Antananarivo](/source/Antananarivo) and 237&nbsp;km south-west of [Antsiranana](/source/Antsiranana). The town belongs to the [district](/source/Districts_of_Madagascar) of [Ambanja](/source/Ambanja_District), which is a part of [Diana Region](/source/Diana_Region).

It is served by the local [Ampampamena Airport](/source/Ampampamena_Airport) and small, local, maritime harbour at [Ankify](/source/Ankify) that is the gate to the islands of [Nosy Be](/source/Nosy_Be) and [Nosy Komba](/source/Nosy_Komba)

The majority 60% of the population are farmers, while an additional 2% receives their livelihood from raising livestock. The most important crop is [cocoa](/source/Cocoa_bean), while other important products are [coffee](/source/coffee), [rice](/source/rice) and [vanilla](/source/vanilla).
