The '''092 coat''' (aka '''The Amazon Coat''') by Chinese brand [Orolay](/source/Orolay) [went viral on the internet](/source/Viral_marketing) from the period between December 2018 and the [COVID-19 pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic). It became [street fashion](/source/Street_style).

== History ==
The Amazon Coat was sold by Orolay on Amazon prior to 2016, but had received little popularity or notice. [Bloggers](/source/Blog) posted about it and increased its popularity.<ref name=":0">{{Cite news |last=Harmanci |first=Reyhan |date=November 26, 2019 |title=The Amazon Coat, One Year Later |language=en-US |work=The New York Times |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/26/style/amazon-coat-shopping-the-amazon-coat-one-year-later.html |access-date=2023-03-02 |issn=0362-4331}}</ref> By autumn 2017, it was being worn by some "ultra-stylish" women on the [Upper East Side](/source/Upper_East_Side) and was picked up by [fashion journalists](/source/Fashion_journalism), who were intrigued why stylish women were wearing a low-priced coat. In early 2018, ''[The Strategist](/source/The_Strategist)'' and [''The'' ''New York Times''](/source/The_New_York_Times) covered it.<ref name=":1">{{Cite web |last=Jennings |first=Rebecca |date=February 25, 2019 |title=How a coat on Amazon took over a neighborhood — and then the internet |url=https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/2/25/18233597/orolay-amazon-coat-upper-east-side |access-date=2023-03-02 |website=Vox |language=en}}</ref> Lauren Posner, an Upper East Side resident, started an [Instagram](/source/Instagram) account chronicling sightings of the coat as a marketing experiment. It sold more than 10,000 units, making Orolay more profit in early 2019 than the entirety of 2017, and causing them to expect $30 to US$40 million in revenue for 2019.<ref name=":0" />

The coat gained further mainstream popularity when [Oprah](/source/Oprah_Winfrey) put it on [her list of favorite things](/source/Oprah's_Favorite_Things) of 2019.<ref name=":0" />

== Reception ==
The coat, sold in separate men's and women's versions, was described as "fairly plain" and "not cool", with its initial color being [olive green](/source/olive_green).<ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2">{{Cite web |last=Schneider |first=Katy |date=March 27, 2018 |title=The Unlikely Tale of an Amazon Coat That's Taken Over the Upper East Side |url=https://nymag.com/strategist/2018/03/the-orolay-amazon-coat-thats-overtaken-the-upper-east-side.html |access-date=2023-03-02 |website=The Strategist |language=en-us}}</ref> Its paneling and [zipper](/source/zipper)s were noted as being influenced by luxury fashion house [Balenciaga](/source/Balenciaga), with the coat's appeal lying in its "super different" appearance and low price despite its resemblance to far more expensive clothing. Its sudden prominence was compared to the [Moncler](/source/Moncler) and the "black puffy [North Face](/source/The_North_Face)" coat of the 1990s.<ref name=":2" />

Despite its origin as a viral trend, much of its popularity may have been inflated by fashion journalists due to profits from [affiliate marketing](/source/affiliate_marketing). The popularity caused the cost of the coat to rise to $140.<ref name=":1" />
