# Amay

**Amay** (amɛ; wa: *Ama*) is a [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_Belgium) of [Wallonia](/source/Wallonia) located in the [province of Liège](/source/Province_of_Li%C3%A8ge), [Belgium](/source/Belgium).

On 1 January 2006 Amay had a total population of approximately 14,231. The total area is 27.61 km2 which gives a [population density](/source/Population_density) of approximately 476 inhabitants per km2. It owes its site to a [ford](/source/Ford_(crossing)) of the [Meuse](/source/Meuse) that was still in use in the Middle Ages but had begun as a [Gallo-Roman](/source/Gallo-Roman) *[vicus](/source/Vicus)* of the *civitas Tungrorum* ([Tongeren](/source/Tongeren)).

The municipality consists of the following [districts](/source/Deelgemeente): Amay, [Ampsin](/source/Ampsin), [Flône](/source/Fl%C3%B4ne), [Jehay](/source/Jehay), and [Ombret-Rawsa](/source/Ombret-Rawsa).
