The genus was originally [circumscribed](/source/circumscription_(taxonomy)) by [Maurice Choisy](/source/Maurice_Choisy) in 1950, with ''[Amandinea coniops](/source/Amandinea_coniops)'' assigned as the [type species](/source/type_species).<ref name="Choisy 1950"/> However, the name was published [invalidly](/source/validly_published_name) because it was not accompanied by a [Latin](/source/Latin) description or diagnosis, a requirement of the [nomenclatural rules](/source/International_Code_of_Nomenclature_for_algae%2C_fungi%2C_and_plants) of the time.<ref name="IF: Amandinea M.Choisy 1950"/> Christoph Scheidegger and Helmut Mayrhofer published the genus name validly in 1993.<ref name="Scheidegger 1993"/> The generic name honours French Madame Amandine Manière, an acquaintance of Choisy.<ref name="Hertel 2012"/>

==Description==

''Amandinea'' species have a [crustose](/source/crustose_lichen) thallus ranging from cracked (rimose) to slightly blistered (bullate). The internal white layer ([medulla](/source/medulla_(lichenology))) is iodine-negative (I−), meaning it does not turn blue in the standard iodine test and is therefore non-[amyloid](/source/amyloid_(mycology)). The [photosynthetic](/source/photosynthesis) partner is a {{lichengloss|chlorococcoid}} green alga, i.e. with small, spherical cells. Sexual fruiting bodies are [apothecia](/source/apothecia) with either a {{lichengloss|lecanorine}} margin (rim made of thallus tissue) or a {{lichengloss|lecideine}} margin (dark, non-thalline rim). These apothecia may be partly sunk into the thallus ({{lichengloss|immersed}}) or sit on top of it ({{lichengloss|sessile}}), with either a broad or narrowed base; the {{lichengloss|discs}} are typically black or nearly so. The tissue beneath the spore layer ({{lichengloss|hypothecium}}) is pale to dark brown, sometimes with olive tones.<ref name="Cannon et al. 2020"/>

Inside the apothecia, the {{lichengloss|hamathecium}} is made of [paraphyses](/source/paraphyses)—microscopic, partitioned threads that run between the spore sacs. These are unbranched or branch only near the tip; the tips are swollen and pigmented, and many bear a dark brown cap. The [asci](/source/ascus) (spore sacs) are club-shaped and of the ''[Lecanora](/source/Lecanora)''-type; they usually contain eight spores, though four or more than eight may occur. The [ascospore](/source/ascospore)s are brown and 1-septate (with a single internal [cross-wall](/source/septum)), sometimes showing a thicker median wall; their surfaces are often finely wrinkled ({{lichengloss|rugose}}), a feature that generally requires [electron microscopy](/source/electron_microscopy) to see reliably. [Asexual reproduction](/source/Asexual_reproduction) is common via [pycnidia](/source/pycnidia) (tiny flask-like structures) that produce curved, thread-like conidia up to about 30&nbsp;[μm](/source/%CE%BCm) long. Chemical tests rarely detect [secondary metabolite](/source/secondary_metabolite)s in this genus ([norstictic acid](/source/norstictic_acid) is uncommon but occurs in a few species), while most species show no substances detectable by [thin-layer chromatography](/source/thin-layer_chromatography).<ref name="Cannon et al. 2020"/>
