Simanek grew up in the [Chicago](/source/Chicago) suburbs. She graduated from the [University of Wisconsin–Madison](/source/University_of_Wisconsin%E2%80%93Madison) with degrees in women's studies and political science.  She went to the [University of Michigan School of Public Health](/source/University_of_Michigan_School_of_Public_Health) for graduate school, earning a [Master of Public Health](/source/Master_of_Public_Health) in International Health Epidemiology and a PhD in Epidemiologic Sciences.<ref name="Lee" />
