## Biography

Hamilton was born in [Toronto](/source/Toronto) and had lived in Europe and Canada before her parents decided to settle in France.[2] She grew up in [Beaune](/source/Beaune) a small town in France before moving to England to study History of Art at [King's College, Cambridge](/source/King's_College,_Cambridge).[3] She later moved back to France for work after graduation. She currently lives in [London](/source/London).

## Work

*Rebel of the Sands* is Hamilton's debut novel and she wrote two more books to make it a trilogy.[4] The book is written for [young adults](/source/Young_adult_fiction) and is part of the [fantasy](/source/Fantasy) genre.[5] In *Rebel*, Amani leaves her hometown, Dustwalk, and travels through a magical countryside to reach the fictional nation of Miraji,[6] in order to avoid an [arranged marriage](/source/Arranged_marriage) to her uncle.[7] *[Publishers Weekly](/source/Publishers_Weekly)* wrote that "Hamilton successfully mingles romance with thrilling stakes, and hints at a welcome sequel."[8] *Rebel* made [YALSA's](/source/Young_Adult_Library_Services_Association) nominations for the Teen's Top 10 list in 2017.[9]

*Traitor to the Throne*, the sequel of *Rebel of the Sands*, continues to follow the story of Amani, who happens to be half-[Djinn](/source/Jinn) and have elemental powers.[10] The *Deseret News* wrote that *Rebel* "was good, but this second book is far and away better."[10]

*[The Globe and Mail](/source/The_Globe_and_Mail)* described the series as *[Lonesome Dove](/source/Lonesome_Dove)* meets *[Aladdin](/source/Aladdin)*.[11] Hamilton said that *[One Thousand and One Nights](/source/One_Thousand_and_One_Nights)* was a big influence on her work.[12]

Film rights of *Rebel* were bought by [Willow Smith](/source/Willow_Smith) in 2017.[6] Smith will lead the film's project and says of *Rebel*, "The nonphysical, creative and, wild nature of a female [heroine's journey](/source/Heroine's_Journey) calls for a unique narrative structure that permeates the very foundation of the story."[13]
