## Archaeology

A [Neolithic](/source/Prehistoric_Britain#Neolithic) stone [hand axe](/source/Hand_axe) was found at Alvescot. [Petrological](/source/Petrology) analysis in 1940 identified the stone as [epidotised](/source/Epidote) [tuff](/source/Tuff) from [Stake Pass](/source/Rossett_Pike) in the [Lake District](/source/Lake_District), 230 miles (370 km) to the north. Stone axes from the same source have been found at [Kencot](/source/Kencot%2C_Oxfordshire), [Abingdon](/source/Abingdon-on-Thames), [Sutton Courtenay](/source/Sutton_Courtenay)[2] and [Minster Lovell](/source/Minster_Lovell).[3]

## Church and chapel

### Church of England

The [Church of England parish church](/source/Church_of_England_parish_church) of [Saint Peter](/source/Saint_Peter) is [cruciform](/source/Cruciform#Cruciform_architectural_plan). The [font](/source/Baptismal_font) is [Norman](/source/Norman_architecture) and 12th- or 13th-century. The north [transept](/source/Transept) and blocked north doorway are early 13th-century. The hoodmould over the south doorway is either late 13th- or early 14th-century, and the south porch was added in the 14th century. In the 15th century the [nave](/source/Nave) was rebuilt and the present [Perpendicular Gothic](/source/English_Gothic_architecture#Perpendicular_Gothic) south transept and west tower were built. In the 16th century the south wall of the south transept was rebuilt and the present [piscina](/source/Piscina) in the south transept was inserted. St Peter's was restored in 1872 under the direction of the architects [William Slater](/source/William_Slater_(architect)) and [Richard Carpenter](/source/Richard_Carpenter_(architect)).[4] It is a [Grade II* listed building](/source/Listed_building#Categories_of_listed_building).[5]

The west tower has a [ring](/source/Change_ringing) of six bells.[6] Abraham II [Rudhall of Gloucester](/source/Rudhall_of_Gloucester) cast the tenor, second and fifth bells in 1727.[7] Robert and James Wells of [Aldbourne](/source/Aldbourne#Bell_foundry), Wiltshire cast the fourth bell in 1796.[7] George Mears of the [Whitechapel Bell Foundry](/source/Whitechapel_Bell_Foundry) cast the third bell in 1859.[7] The Whitechapel Bell Foundry also cast the treble bell in 1985.[7] St Peter's parish is now part of the [Benefice](/source/Benefice#Church_of_England) of Shill Valley and Broadshire.

### Baptist

Alvescot used to have a [Baptist](/source/Baptist) congregation. Its former chapel is now a private house.[8] There was also a [Methodist](/source/Methodist_Church_of_Great_Britain) congregation, but its chapel was demolished in the 1990s.[8]

## Economic and social history

In 1873 the [East Gloucestershire Railway](/source/Oxford%2C_Witney_and_Fairford_Railway) between [Fairford](/source/Fairford_railway_station) and [Witney](/source/Witney_railway_station) was opened. It provided [Alvescot railway station](/source/Alvescot_railway_station) just outside the village on the road to [Black Bourton](/source/Black_Bourton). The [Great Western Railway](/source/Great_Western_Railway) took over the line in 1890 and [British Railways](/source/British_Rail) closed it in 1962.

## Amenities

Alvescot has a [public house](/source/Public_house), the Plough Inn,[9] and a [Church of England](/source/Voluntary_controlled_school) infants' school.[10]
