Kallman was born in [New York City](/source/New_York_City)<ref name=Census/> to Charles Kallman and Regina Kallman. His father died when he was ten or eleven.<ref name=Heritage/> 

Kallman was a [barnstorming](/source/barnstorming) pilot and later an [air mail](/source/air_mail) pilot in the early 20th century. After retiring from flying, he worked for the [Hotel St. George](/source/Hotel_St._George) in New York, serving as banquet manager from 1930 to 1939 (being the youngest banquet manager in the industry when appointed),<ref name=GuideBook/> then serving as [general manager](/source/general_manager) from 1939 to 1943.<ref name=TimesObit/>

Kallman then became owner of [The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel](/source/The_Balsams_Grand_Resort_Hotel) in [Dixville Notch, New Hampshire](/source/Dixville_Notch%2C_New_Hampshire) and in 1946 part-owner (with Benno Bechhold and Harry Socoloff) of [Feltman's](/source/Feltman's), the large iconic complex at [Coney Island](/source/Coney_Island) containing the world's largest restaurant and other attractions, buying it from founder [Charles Feltman](/source/Charles_Feltman)'s family.<ref name=TimesObit/><ref name=Billboard/><ref name=Eagle/><ref name=Schulz/> He also owned the [Savoy-Plaza Hotel](/source/Savoy-Plaza_Hotel) in New York.<ref name=HeraldPost/>

In 1953, Kallman bought the then-new St. Johns Hotel<ref name=TimesObit/> in the [Vedado](/source/Vedado) district of [Havana](/source/Havana), and a few years later added ten more stories.<ref name=CubaHeritage/> Following the [Cuban Revolution](/source/Cuban_Revolution), the [Castro government](/source/Cuba_under_Fidel_Castro) nationalized his property in 1960 and expelled him from Cuba,<ref name=TimesObit/> wiping out his fortune.<ref name=HeraldPost/> He died in [Miami](/source/Miami) in 1964.<ref name=TimesObit/>
