**Alturas** is a [russet](/source/Russet_potato) [potato](/source/Potato) variety released in 2002 by the [USDA-ARS](/source/USDA-ARS) and the [Agricultural Experiment Stations](/source/Agricultural_Experiment_Station) of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington and it is under [plant variety protection](/source/Plant_variety_protection).[1] It is a processing potato that has cold-sweetening resistance, so it can be processed directly out of storage into [French fries](/source/French_fries) and other frozen potato products.

## Botanical features

- [Tubers](/source/Tuber) are lightly russeted with brown skin

- Tubers are oval to oblong

- Tuber sprouts are green

- Flesh is white and has a shallow eyes

- Has a large, open [canopy](/source/Canopy_(biology)) and is a late-maturing variety

- Plant stems are green with some [anthocyanin](/source/Anthocyanin) pigmentation

- Has white flowers and yellow [anthers](/source/Anther)

- Range of one to eight inflorescences per plant

### Agricultural features

- Higher [yields](/source/Crop_yield) and higher [specific gravity](/source/Specific_gravity) than [Russet Burbank](/source/Russet_Burbank)

- Resistant to Verticiliium wilt and [early blight](/source/Early_blight)

- Superior to the more common Russet Burbank in that it is more resistant to Corky ringspot, [late blight](/source/Late_blight), tuber net necrosis (caused by [Potato leafroll virus](/source/Potato_leafroll_virus)), [Fusarium](/source/Fusarium) dry rot, and [common scab](/source/Common_scab)

- Susceptible to [Potato virus X](/source/Potato_virus_X), [Potato virus Y](/source/Potato_virus_Y), [bacterial soft rot](/source/Bacterial_soft_rot), [root-knot nematode](/source/Root-knot_nematode), and bacterial ring rot
