## Climate

Altai City has a typical Mongolian [cold semi-arid climate](/source/Semi-arid_climate#Cold_semi-arid_climates) ([Köppen](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification) *BSk*) with [subarctic](/source/Subarctic_climate) (Dwc) influences. Despite the annual mean temperature of −0.5 °C or 31.1 °F being cold enough for [sporadic permafrost](/source/Sporadic_permafrost), the climate is nearly dry enough to qualify as a [cold arid climate](/source/Desert_climate#Cold_desert_climate) (*BWk*). Altai City experiences long, very dry and very cold winters alongside short, mild summers when the majority of the scant precipitation occurs.
