== History ==
The [Habsburgs](/source/Habsburgs) ruled over the villages in Vorarlberg alternately from [Tyrol](/source/County_of_Tyrol) and [Further Austria](/source/Further_Austria). In 1801, Altach was separated from neighboring Götzis; from 1805 to 1814 Altach belonged to [Bavaria](/source/Bavaria), then reverted to Austria. Altach has been part of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since the latter's founding in 1861. From 1945 to 1955, the municipality was in the [French occupation zone](/source/Occupation_Zones_in_Austria) in Austria.

[Altach railway station](/source/Altach_railway_station) is on the main west–east route connecting the [Vorarlberg railway](/source/Vorarlberg_railway) line ({{lang|de|Vorarlbergbahn}}) in the directions of [Bregenz](/source/Bregenz) and [Feldkirch](/source/Feldkirch%2C_Vorarlberg)/[Bludenz](/source/Bludenz), continuing eastward over the [Arlberg Railway](/source/Arlberg_Railway) line to [Innsbruck](/source/Innsbruck) and beyond.
