{{Short description|Female given name}}
'''Alruna''' ([Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse) '''Ǫlrún''', [Old High German](/source/Old_High_German) '''Ailrun''', Modern German '''Alruna''', '''[Alraune](/source/Alraune)''') is a Germanic female personal name, from [Proto Germanic](/source/Proto_Germanic) ''*aliruna'' (or possibly ''*agilruna''), which is formed from ''[runa](/source/rune)'' "secret, rune" and a debated prefix that may be ''ali-'', ''agil-'', or ''[alu-](/source/Alu_(runic))''.

In German, ''Alruna'' was also used as a short form of ''Adelruna'', a different name with a first element ''*athal-'' "noble".

In [Germanic mythology](/source/Germanic_mythology), Ailrun is the wife of [Agilaz](/source/Agilaz), the legendary archer. In the poem ''[Völundarkviða](/source/V%C3%B6lundarkvi%C3%B0a)'', '''Ölrun''' (possibly [Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse) "ale rune"<ref name=SIMEK251>Simek (2007:251).</ref>) is identified as a [valkyrie](/source/valkyrie), and as a daughter of [Kiár](/source/Ki%C3%A1r) of [Valland](/source/Valland).

[Alruna of Cham](/source/Alruna_of_Cham) was an 11th-century [Bavaria](/source/Bavaria)n recluse, the [Roman Catholic](/source/Roman_Catholic) patroness of pregnancy. It is also the name for the ''[Mandragora](/source/Mandragora_(genus))'' or mandrake, a plant belonging to the nightshade family, in a number of [Germanic languages](/source/Germanic_languages): '''alruna''' in [Swedish](/source/Swedish_language), '''alrune''' in [Danish](/source/Danish_language) and [Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language), and '''[Alraune](/source/Alraune)''' in [German](/source/German_language).
