'''Alphonse Verville''' (October 28, 1864 &ndash; June 20, 1930) was a [Canadian](/source/Canadians) politician and [trade union](/source/trade_union)ist.

Born and raised in the [Côte-Saint-Paul](/source/C%C3%B4te-Saint-Paul) neighbourhood of [Montreal](/source/Montreal), Verville was a plumber by trade. At the age of 18 he moved to [Chicago](/source/Chicago) and joined the [International Plumbers' Union](/source/International_Plumbers'_Union). He returned to Montreal in 1893 and worked to organize plumbers. He became leader of the plumbers' union in Montreal and in 1904 became president of the MTLC, Montreal's [Trades and Labour Council](/source/Trades_and_Labour_Council).<ref name="CSN, CEQ">{{harvnb|Confederation of National Trade Unions|Centrale de l'enseignement du Québec|1987|p=101}}</ref> Verville served as president of the [Trades and Labour Congress of Canada](/source/Trades_and_Labour_Congress_of_Canada) from 1904 to 1910.

Politically, Verville was an early advocate of the [trade union](/source/trade_union) movement running their own candidates for political office. He was elected to the [House of Commons of Canada](/source/House_of_Commons_of_Canada) as a [Labour](/source/Labour_Party_(Canada)) candidate in a 1906 [by-election](/source/by-election) in [Maisonneuve](/source/Maisonneuve_(federal_electoral_district)), defeating a [Liberal](/source/Liberal_Party_of_Canada) opponent, and was re-elected as a Labour MP in the [1908](/source/1908_Canadian_federal_election) and [1911 federal election](/source/1911_Canadian_federal_election)s. Upon entering parliament he became a supporter of the Liberals and was often billed as a [Liberal-Labour](/source/Liberal-Labour_(Canada)) MP. In his re-election contests he was supported by the Liberals who ran no candidate of their own against him. In the [1917 federal election](/source/1917_Canadian_general_election) caused by the [Conscription Crisis of 1917](/source/Conscription_Crisis_of_1917), Verville ran and was elected as a [Laurier Liberal](/source/Laurier_Liberal) in the [riding](/source/Riding_(division)) of St-Denis. He remained in the Commons until 1921.  After nine years in retirement, he died on 20 June 1930 in Montreal, at the age of 65, following stomach surgery.
