The name likely comes from Greek 'alo' (variant of allo) meaning 'other', and 'bates' meaning 'one who treads/haunts'. There are at least two described species in ''Alobates''.<ref name=gbif/><ref name=bugref/><ref name=eol/> These species are often misidentified, but can be differentiated by a view of the [mentum](/source/mentum) of the head [ventral](/source/ventral). ''[A. barbatus](/source/A._barbatus)'' have a tuft of long yellow [setae](/source/Seta), while ''[A. pensylvanicus](/source/Alobates_pennsylvanica)'' does not.
