# Allen Knutson

**Allen Ivar Knutson** is an American mathematician who is a professor of mathematics at [Cornell University](/source/Cornell_University).[1]

## Education

Knutson graduated from Stuyvesant High School and completed his undergraduate studies at the [California Institute of Technology](/source/California_Institute_of_Technology)[2] and received a Ph.D. from the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology) in 1996 under the joint advisorship of [Victor Guillemin](/source/Victor_Guillemin) and [Lisa Jeffrey](/source/Lisa_Jeffrey).[3]

## Career

He was on the faculty at the [University of California, Berkeley](/source/University_of_California,_Berkeley) before moving to the [University of California, San Diego](/source/University_of_California,_San_Diego) in 2005 and then to [Cornell University](/source/Cornell_University) in 2009.[4] In 2005, he and [Terence Tao](/source/Terence_Tao) won the [Levi L. Conant Prize](/source/Levi_L._Conant_Prize) of the [American Mathematical Society](/source/American_Mathematical_Society) for their paper "Honeycombs and Sums of Hermitian Matrices".[5] He was an invited speaker at the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians.[6]

Knutson is also known for his studies of the [mathematics of juggling](/source/Mathematics_of_juggling).[7] For five years beginning in 1990, he and fellow Caltech student David Morton held a [world record](/source/Juggling_world_records#Balls) for passing 12 balls.[2]

## Personal life

Knutson is the son of Donald Ivar Knutson, an American mathematician and financial executive at [CBS](/source/CBS).[8]
