He was born on 4 November 1916<ref name="DNZB Pyatt">{{DNZB|last=Brown|first=Colin |id=5P42|title=Pyatt, William Allan|access-date=2019-11-27}}</ref> and educated at Christchurch Technical College and the [University of Auckland](/source/University_of_Auckland).<ref>[Who's Who](/source/Who's_Who) 2008: London, [A & C Black](/source/A_%26_C_Black), 2008 {{ISBN|978-0-7136-8555-8}}</ref>  He served with the [Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force](/source/2_NZEF) throughout the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War) and was ordained in 1946.<ref>[Crockford's Clerical Directory](/source/Crockford's_Clerical_Directory)1975–76 Lambeth, Church House, 1975 {{ISBN|0-19-200008-X}}</ref> After a [curacy](/source/Curate) at [St Luke's Church, Cannock](/source/St_Luke's_Church%2C_Cannock) he had [incumbencies](/source/Vicar) in [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn%2C_Wellington), [Hāwera](/source/H%C4%81wera) then [Wellington](/source/Wellington). From 1962 until his ordination to the [episcopate](/source/episcopate) in 1966 he was [Dean](/source/Dean_(religion)) of [ChristChurch Cathedral](/source/ChristChurch_Cathedral).
