He has been described as a "well-known and highly regarded figure in Christian and especially [evangelical](/source/Evangelicalism) circles within Australia and overseas."[1] ## Early life and education Harman was born in [Lismore, New South Wales](/source/Lismore%2C_New_South_Wales), son of Rev Joseph Harman, minister of the [Presbyterian Church of Eastern Australia](/source/Presbyterian_Church_of_Eastern_Australia) and Jessie Harman. Educated at [Taree High School](/source/Taree_High_School)[2] and the [University of Sydney](/source/University_of_Sydney), Harman graduated with a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in 1957. He then studied overseas, at the [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh), gaining a [Bachelor of Divinity](/source/Bachelor_of_Divinity) in 1960, and [Master of Letters](/source/Master_of_Letters) in Hebrew and [Semitic Languages](/source/Semitic_Languages), before going on to [Westminster Theological Seminary](/source/Westminster_Theological_Seminary) where he achieved a [Master of Theology](/source/Master_of_Theology) in 1961 and later a [Doctor of Theology](/source/Doctor_of_Theology).[1] In 2003, he was granted an honorary Doctor of Theology from the [Australian College of Theology](/source/Australian_College_of_Theology).[3] ## Career After a pastorate of [Geelong](/source/Geelong) Presbyterian Church of Eastern Australia (ordained and inducted 21 March 1962) and studies in Philadelphia 1964–66, Harman was Professor of Old Testament at [Free Church of Scotland College](/source/Free_Church_of_Scotland_College), Edinburgh, from 1966 to 1974, at [Reformed Theological College](/source/Reformed_Theological_College), [Geelong](/source/Geelong%2C_Victoria), from 1974 to 1977 and at [Presbyterian Theological College](/source/Presbyterian_Theological_College)(PTC), [Melbourne](/source/Melbourne), from 1978 until his retirement in 2001. He also served as Principal of PTC from 1982 to 2001, and is currently research professor at that institution. He has also lectured at [Tyndale University College and Seminary](/source/Tyndale_University_College_and_Seminary) in [Toronto](/source/Toronto), [Reformed Theological Seminary](/source/Reformed_Theological_Seminary) in [Jackson, Mississippi](/source/Jackson%2C_Mississippi) and [Kosin University](/source/Kosin_University) in [Busan](/source/Busan), [South Korea](/source/South_Korea).[1] Harman served as [Moderator](/source/Moderator_of_the_General_Assembly) of the [Presbyterian Church of Eastern Australia](/source/Presbyterian_Church_of_Eastern_Australia) in 1978, transferring his ministry to the Presbyterian Church of Australia in 1981, Moderator of the [Presbyterian Church of Victoria](/source/Presbyterian_Church_of_Victoria) in 1989–90 and Moderator-General of the [Presbyterian Church of Australia](/source/Presbyterian_Church_of_Australia) from 1994 to 1997. He was a member of the board of directors of the [World Reformed Fellowship](/source/World_Reformed_Fellowship), and has been an editor of the *[Reformed Theological Review](/source/Reformed_Theological_Review)* since 1989. He was also one of the translators of the [New King James Version](/source/New_King_James_Version).[6] Harman's wife Mairi was the stepdaughter of [A. M. Renwick](/source/A._M._Renwick), and Harman has updated and expanded Renwick's book *The Story of the Church*.[7] In 2001, a *[Festschrift](/source/Festschrift)* was compiled in Harman's honour, on the occasion of his retirement and 65th birthday.
