==Playing career==
Bester was born in [Hamilton, Ontario](/source/Hamilton%2C_Ontario). He played with the [Brantford Alexanders](/source/Brantford_Alexanders) of the [OHL](/source/Ontario_Hockey_League) for three seasons before moving on to professional hockey. He was drafted into the [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League) (NHL) by the [Toronto Maple Leafs](/source/Toronto_Maple_Leafs) in the third round (48th overall) of the [1983 NHL entry draft](/source/1983_NHL_entry_draft).

Bester spent parts of 11 seasons in the NHL, beginning in [1983–84](/source/1983%E2%80%9384_NHL_season). He spent eight years in Toronto, and then was traded to the [Detroit Red Wings](/source/Detroit_Red_Wings) in 1991. He spent most of his career moving between the NHL and [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League) (AHL). In 1992, Bester won a [Calder Cup](/source/Calder_Cup) with the [Adirondack Red Wings](/source/Adirondack_Red_Wings). He was awarded the [Jack A. Butterfield Trophy](/source/Jack_A._Butterfield_Trophy) as playoff MVP. Bester made a short return to the NHL after a four-year absence, playing ten games for the [Dallas Stars](/source/Dallas_Stars) in the mid-1990s.

Bester ended his career in the [International Hockey League](/source/International_Hockey_League_(1945%E2%80%932001)) (IHL). He played with both the [San Diego Gulls](/source/San_Diego_Gulls_(1990%E2%80%9395)) and [Orlando Solar Bears](/source/Orlando_Solar_Bears_(IHL)) before announcing his retirement in August 1998.
