***Alkohol*** ('Alcohol') is a 1919 German [silent](/source/Silent_film) [drama film](/source/Drama_film) directed by [Ewald André Dupont](/source/Ewald_Andr%C3%A9_Dupont) and [Alfred Lind](/source/Alfred_Lind) and starring [Wilhelm Diegelmann](/source/Wilhelm_Diegelmann), [Ernst Rückert](/source/Ernst_R%C3%BCckert), and [Georg H. Schnell](/source/Georg_H._Schnell). The film was begun by Lind but finished by Dupont. It was his first major melodrama, and represented a breakthrough in his career. The film's theme and setting foreshadow much of his later work.[1] It was one in a series of "Enlightenment films" examining social issues, which were produced around the time.[2] It premiered at the [Marmorhaus](/source/Marmorhaus) in [Berlin](/source/Berlin).

## Synopsis

A [middle-class](/source/Middle-class) man falls in love with a woman from a more ordinary background, and they end up working in a [variety act](/source/Variety_act) where they sink into [alcoholism](/source/Alcoholism). He then kills another man who he mistakenly believes is a rival.
