# Alix Joffroy

**Alix Joffroy** (16 December 1844, in [Stainville](/source/Stainville) – 24 November 1908) was a French [neurologist](/source/Neurologist) and [psychiatrist](/source/Psychiatrist) remembered for describing [Joffroy's sign](/source/Joffroy's_sign). He studied in [Paris](/source/Paris), earning his doctorate in 1873, becoming médecin des hôpitaux in 1879 and [agrégé](/source/Agr%C3%A9gation) in 1880. He worked at the [Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital](/source/Piti%C3%A9-Salp%C3%AAtri%C3%A8re_Hospital) from 1885 and succeeded [Benjamin Ball](/source/Benjamin_Ball_(physician)) as professor of clinical psychiatry in 1893.

[Jean-Martin Charcot](/source/Jean-Martin_Charcot) encouraged him to study neurology, and together they demonstrated [atrophy](/source/Atrophy) of [anterior horn cells](/source/Anterior_horn_(spinal_cord)) in the [spinal cord](/source/Spinal_cord) in [poliomyelitis](/source/Poliomyelitis) in 1869.
