Australian film director and scriptwriter

**Alister Grierson** (born 1969) is an Australian film director and scriptwriter.

## Early life and education

Born in [Canberra](/source/Canberra), he completed his secondary schooling at [Canberra Grammar School](/source/Canberra_Grammar_School), graduated in Economics and Arts from the [Australian National University](/source/Australian_National_University) and studied Japanese in Tokyo.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] As an under-18 [Australian Rules](/source/Australian_Rules) player, he represented the [ACT](/source/Australian_Capital_Territory) in the [Teal Cup](/source/AFL_Under_18_Championships) but later switched to [Rugby](/source/Rugby_union), playing 1st grade both for his school and the ANU. Whilst at university, his interest in film-making developed, and he later gained a Master of Arts in Directing at [AFTRS](/source/AFTRS). He has shot 15 short films winning three [Tropfest](/source/Tropfest) awards[1] and is the director of the feature film, *[Kokoda](/source/Kokoda_(film))*, which he co-wrote.

## Career

In 2009, Grierson was invited to the *[Avatar](/source/Avatar_(2009_film))* set during shooting by [James Cameron](/source/James_Cameron), and was selected to direct a 3D cave-diving drama *[Sanctum](/source/Sanctum_(film))*, using the Cameron-developed [Fusion Camera System](/source/Fusion_Camera_System).[2] The script is inspired by the near-death experience of one of the writers, [Andrew Wight](/source/Andrew_Wight), who was trapped in a cave collapse under the [Nullarbor Plain](/source/Nullarbor_Plain). It was shot at [Warner Roadshow Studios](/source/Warner_Roadshow_Studios) on the [Queensland Gold Coast](/source/Gold_Coast%2C_Queensland), and the film opened 4 February 2011.[3] By mid-March the film had joined the top ten Worldwide Box Office Results (Australian Films): All Time,[4] in ninth position.[5] The worldwide gross had reached $108,943,221 by 19 October 2011.[6]

He is the director of *Parer's War*, starring [Matthew Le Nevez](/source/Matthew_Le_Nevez) and [Adelaide Clemens](/source/Adelaide_Clemens), a dramatised biopic about [Damien Parer](/source/Damien_Parer) for the [ABC](/source/Australian_Broadcasting_Corporation). Although set in Sydney (for the Australian locations), much of the filming was done in Queensland. The script, by [Alison Nisselle](/source/Alison_Nisselle), is an adaptation of Neil McDonald's book *Damien Parer’s War*.[7][8] Released on 27 April 2014, the film attracted the following comments from [Graeme Blundell](/source/Graeme_Blundell) in *[The Australian](/source/The_Australian)*: "Parer's War is taut, intelligently constructed and sharply executed by Grierson,..." and "It’s all beautifully put together by Grierson..."[9]

Grierson directed the final three episodes of both series of the award-winning ABC serial *[Nowhere Boys](/source/Nowhere_Boys)*.

He directed *[Tiger](/source/Tiger_(2018_film))*, written by Michael Pugliese and Prem Singh. [Mickey Rourke](/source/Mickey_Rourke) plays Frank Donovan in the film, which is produced by [Mary Aloe](/source/Mary_Aloe),[10] and co-stars Pugliese, Singh and [Janel Parrish](/source/Janel_Parrish).[11] Tiger was released at the [San Diego International Film Festival](/source/San_Diego_International_Film_Festival) on 13 October 2018 where it won Best Feature Film.
