**Alison Van Uytvanck** (Dutch pronunciation: [\[vɑn ˈœytfɑŋk\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Dutch); born 26 March 1994) is a Belgian former professional [tennis](/source/Tennis) player. In August 2018, she reached her best singles ranking of world No. 37.

Van Uytvanck won five singles and two doubles [WTA Tour](/source/WTA_Tour) titles and three Challenger Tour singles titles, as well as 15 singles and two doubles titles on the [ITF Circuit](/source/ITF_Women's_World_Tennis_Tour).

## Personal life

Van Uytvanck was born in the small town of [Grimbergen](/source/Grimbergen) to René Van Uytvanck and Krista Laemers. She started playing tennis at age five when her older brother Sean introduced her to the game. She has a twin brother named Brett. Van Uytvanck graduated from high school at Sint-Donatus in [Merchtem](/source/Merchtem). As a junior, she alternated between training with local coach Sacha Katsnelson and the Flemish Tennis Association, where she was coached by [Ann Devries](/source/Ann_Devries). She admires [Roger Federer](/source/Roger_Federer), and her compatriot [Kim Clijsters](/source/Kim_Clijsters).[1][2] Van Uytvanck was in a relationship with fellow Belgian tennis player [Greet Minnen](/source/Greet_Minnen).[3][4] In July 2023, she married Emilie Vermeiren.[5]

## Career

Van Uytvanck played her first professional tennis match aged 15 in 2009.[6] She made her [WTA Tour](/source/WTA_Tour) main-draw debut at the [2011 Brussels Open](/source/2011_Brussels_Open_%E2%80%93_Singles) where she entered as a qualifier and defeated [Patty Schnyder](/source/Patty_Schnyder) in the first round, before losing to fellow Belgian and sixth seed [Yanina Wickmayer](/source/Yanina_Wickmayer) in her next match.[7]

In February 2012, she debuted for [Belgium](/source/Belgium_Fed_Cup_team) in [Fed Cup](/source/Fed_Cup) against [Serbia](/source/Serbia_Fed_Cup_team), partnering with Yanina Wickmayer in the deciding doubles match, which they lost to [Ana Ivanovic](/source/Ana_Ivanovic) and [Bojana Jovanovski](/source/Bojana_Jovanovski_Petrovi%C4%87).[8]

As a wildcard entrant at the [2012 Brussels Open](/source/2012_Brussels_Open_%E2%80%93_Singles), Van Uytvanck reached her first WTA quarterfinal, where she lost to top seed [Agnieszka Radwańska](/source/Agnieszka_Radwa%C5%84ska).[9]

Ranked world No. 129, she won her first [WTA 125](/source/WTA_125_tournaments) title at the [2013 Taipei Ladies Open](/source/2013_OEC_Taipei_WTA_Ladies_Open_%E2%80%93_Singles), defeating world No. 50 and second seed Yanina Wickmayer in the final.[10][11]

Van Uytvanck made her [major](/source/Grand_Slam_(tennis)) main-draw debut at the [2014 Australian Open](/source/2014_Australian_Open_%E2%80%93_Women's_singles), losing to [Virginie Razzano](/source/Virginie_Razzano) in the first round.[12] In June 2014 at [Wimbledon](/source/2014_Wimbledon_Championships_%E2%80%93_Women's_singles), she got her maiden win at a major, overcoming [Monica Niculescu](/source/Monica_Niculescu) to make it through to the second round,[13] at which point she lost to 10th seed [Dominika Cibulková](/source/Dominika_Cibulkov%C3%A1) in three sets.[14]

Her best run at a major came at the [2015 French Open](/source/2015_French_Open_%E2%80%93_Women's_singles), where she made the quarterfinals, losing to [Timea Bacsinszky](/source/Timea_Bacsinszky).[15]

Van Uytvanck won her first WTA title at the [2017 Coupe Banque Nationale](/source/2017_Coupe_Banque_Nationale_%E2%80%93_Singles) in [Quebec City](/source/Quebec_City), defeating [Tímea Babos](/source/T%C3%ADmea_Babos) in the final in three sets.[16][17]

Her second WTA title came in February 2018 at [Hungarian Ladies Open](/source/2018_Hungarian_Ladies_Open_%E2%80%93_Singles), where she outlasted top seed Dominika Cibulková in a three set final played over two hours and 11 minutes.[18][19]

At the [2018 Wimbledon Championships](/source/2018_Wimbledon_Championships_%E2%80%93_Women's_singles), she defeated [Polona Hercog](/source/Polona_Hercog) in the first round[20] and then eliminated defending champion and third seed, [Garbiñe Muguruza](/source/Garbi%C3%B1e_Muguruza), to record her first win over a top-10 ranked player.[21][22] Next Van Uytvanck overcame 28th seed [Anett Kontaveit](/source/Anett_Kontaveit),[23] before losing in the fourth round to 14th seed [Daria Kasatkina](/source/Daria_Kasatkina).[24]

Partnering [Greet Minnen](/source/Greet_Minnen), she won her first WTA Tour doubles title at the [2018 Luxembourg Open](/source/2018_BGL_Luxembourg_Open_%E2%80%93_Doubles), defeating [Vera Lapko](/source/Vera_Lapko) and [Mandy Minella](/source/Mandy_Minella) in the final.[25]

In February 2019, Van Uytvanck successfully defended her title at the [Hungarian Ladies Open](/source/2019_Hungarian_Ladies_Open_%E2%80%93_Singles), with a win over [Markéta Vondroušová](/source/Mark%C3%A9ta_Vondrou%C5%A1ov%C3%A1) in the final.[26] She won her second title of 2019 at the [Tashkent Open](/source/2019_Tashkent_Open_%E2%80%93_Singles) in September, defeating [Sorana Cîrstea](/source/Sorana_C%C3%AErstea) in the final.[27][28]

Representing Belgium at the delayed [Tokyo Olympics](/source/Tennis_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_singles), Van Uytvanck defeated 10th seed [Petra Kvitová](/source/Petra_Kvitov%C3%A1) in the second round,[29] before losing to seventh seed Garbiñe Muguruza in her next match.[30]

Alongside Greet Minnen, she beat [Erin Routliffe](/source/Erin_Routliffe) and [Kimberley Zimmermann](/source/Kimberley_Zimmermann) in the final to win the doubles title at [Luxembourg Open](/source/2021_BGL_Luxembourg_Open_%E2%80%93_Doubles) in September 2021.[31] The following week Van Uytvanck claimed her fifth, and last, WTA title at the [2021 Astana Open](/source/2021_Astana_Open_%E2%80%93_Women's_singles), defeating top seed [Yulia Putintseva](/source/Yulia_Putintseva) in the final.[32][33]

She won the WTA 125 event in [Limoges](/source/2021_Open_de_Limoges_%E2%80%93_Singles) in December 2021, overcoming [Ana Bogdan](/source/Ana_Bogdan) in the final.[34]

As top seed, Van Uytvanck defeated [Sara Errani](/source/Sara_Errani) in the final to claim the title at the [2022 WTA 125 Veneto Open](/source/2022_Veneto_Open_%E2%80%93_Singles).[35]

She won the 24th, and final, singles title of her career at the [ITF W100 Surbiton Trophy](/source/2024_Surbiton_Trophy_%E2%80%93_Women's_singles) in June 2024, overcoming second seed [Tatjana Maria](/source/Tatjana_Maria) in the championship match.[36][37]

On 19 August 2024, Van Uytvanck announced her retirement from professional tennis at the age of 30, stating she no longer had the "same fire it takes to give my all" after struggling "physically and especially mentally" following a back injury which had forced her to miss most of the 2023 season.[6][38]
