# Alice Spigelman

**Alice Eve-Marie Spigelman** is a [Hungarian](/source/Hungary)-born [Australian](/source/Australia) clinical psychologist, writer and human rights advocate. She was previously chair of [Sculpture by the Sea](/source/Sculpture_by_the_Sea). Her most recent book is *The Budapest Job*, a thriller set in 1989, at the time of the [collapse](/source/Dissolution_of_the_Soviet_Union) of the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union). She has written a play *A Kind of Reunion,* to be premiered in Sydney, NSW in December 2020.

## Early life and education

Spigelman was born in Hungary[1] and came to Sydney with her family in 1956.[2] On arrival in Sydney, with little English, she started school at [Santa Sabina College](/source/Santa_Sabina_College). She has a BA and MA and a postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology from the [University of Sydney](/source/University_of_Sydney).[3]

## Career

Following publication of her biography of architect [Harry Seidler](/source/Harry_Seidler), Spigelman gave a speech on him at [The Sydney Institute](/source/The_Sydney_Institute) in April 2011 which was subsequently published in *Sydney Papers*, vol. 13, no. 2 in 2001.[4][5]

Spigelman was, at one time, marketing director of [The Benevolent Society](/source/The_Benevolent_Society), director of the [Bundanon Trust](/source/Bundanon_Trust), [National Institute of Dramatic Art](/source/National_Institute_of_Dramatic_Art), [Australian Institute of Music](/source/Australian_Institute_of_Music) and the Rural Leadership Program.[6] She became a director of [Australia for UNHCR](/source/Australia_for_UNHCR) in February 2006 and was chair of the Women's Projects Committee in 2014.[6] Spigelman was a member of the Advisory Council, Faculty of Built Environment at the [University of New South Wales](/source/University_of_New_South_Wales).[7] She is also a member of the advisory board of the [Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation](/source/Kinchela,_New_South_Wales#Kinchella_Boys_Home), which helps members of the [Stolen Generation](/source/Stolen_Generations) to take control of their future.[8]

Spigelman joined the Board of Sculpture by the Sea in 2010 and became chair in 2016.[9]

## Awards and recognition

In the [2012 Queen's Birthday Honours](/source/2012_Queen's_Birthday_Honours_(Australia)) Spigelman was made a [Member of the Order of Australia](/source/Member_of_the_Order_of_Australia) (AM) for "service to the community as an advocate for [human rights](/source/Human_rights) and social justice, particularly for women and refugees, and through contributions to cultural organisations".[10]
