**Ali Bakar** (18 November 1947 – 16 August 2003) was a [football player](/source/FA_Penang) who represented the [Malaysian national football team](/source/Malaysian_national_football_team) from 1970 until 1976.[1] He played for [Penang FA](/source/Penang_FA) in Malaysia's domestic competition. He was the [flag bearer for Malaysia](/source/List_of_flag_bearers_for_Malaysia_at_the_Olympics) at the [1972 Summer Olympics](/source/1972_Summer_Olympics).[2]

## Career overview

A midfielder, Ali was a squad player for the Malaysia team in the [1972 Munich Olympics](/source/1972_Munich_Olympics) [football competition](/source/Football_at_the_1972_Summer_Olympics), and also represented Malaysia when it finished third in the [1974 Asian Games](/source/1974_Asian_Games) in [Iran](/source/Iran).[3][4] Also in 1974, he was part of the [Malaysia Cup](/source/Malaysia_Cup)-winning Penang side.[5] After two years, he also helped Penang side to win the international tournament, [Aga Khan Gold Cup](/source/Aga_Khan_Gold_Cup) held in Dhaka.[6]

## Personal life

Ali's brother, [Isa Bakar](/source/Isa_Bakar), was a football player, also playing for Penang and Malaysia.[7]

Ali suffered a heart attack and died on the field while playing in a charity football match in Singapore on 16 August 2003.[8] His body was buried in Penang.[9] In 2004, he was inducted in [Olympic Council of Malaysia](/source/Olympic_Council_of_Malaysia)'s Hall of Fame for [1972 Summer Olympics football team](/source/Football_at_the_1972_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_team_squads#Malaysia).[10]
