# Alfred Warren

**Sir Alfred Warren** [OBE](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire) (6 February 1856 - 1 August 1927) was a [Conservative Party](/source/Conservative_Party_(UK)) politician who served as borough councillor and mayor of [Poplar](/source/Metropolitan_Borough_of_Poplar), and then as a [Member](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) of [Parliament](/source/Parliament_of_the_United_Kingdom).

Alfred Harman Warren was born in Poplar on 6 February 1856 and educated at the local Wesleyan School. He was a member of [Poplar Borough Council](/source/Metropolitan_Borough_of_Poplar), serving as Mayor of Poplar from 1913 to 1918.[1]

In the June 1918 King's [Birthday Honours](/source/Birthday_Honours) Alfred Warren was both [knighted](/source/Knight_bachelor)[2] and made an Officer of the [Order of the British Empire](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire) (OBE).[3] The [London Gazette](/source/London_Gazette) entries for these two honours summarise the extent of his activities in support of the war effort during the [First World War](/source/First_World_War):

- *For the knighthood*: "For public and local services. Mayor of Poplar for the last five years. Responsible, at the invitation of the Army Council, for raising the 239th Troop, [Royal Engineers](/source/Royal_Engineers). Inaugurated and raised the [1/6th London Regiment](/source/City_of_London_Rifles), Poplar Volunteer Battalion, and provided the equipment and upkeep. Chairman of the Local Tribunal. Chairman of the Local War Savings Committee. Founded a voluntary fund for alleviating distress caused by air raids. Chairman and Treasurer of the War Hospital Supply Depot."[2]
- *For the OBE*: "Chairman of Local Tribunal, National Relief Fund and Belgian Refugees' Committee, Poplar."[3]

At the [1918 General Election](/source/1918_United_Kingdom_general_election) Sir Alfred was elected to [Parliament](/source/Parliament_of_the_United_Kingdom) as member for [Edmonton](/source/Edmonton_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) in [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex),[4] standing as a Conservative supporter of [David Lloyd George](/source/David_Lloyd_George)'s coalition Government. He stood again at the [general election of 1922](/source/1922_United_Kingdom_general_election), but was defeated by the [Labour Party](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) candidate, [Frank Broad](/source/Francis_Alfred_Broad).[5]

Active in the [Manchester Unity of Oddfellows](/source/Independent_Order_of_Oddfellows_Manchester_Unity), he served as its Grand Master, and was also president of the National Conference of Friendly Societies.[1]

Sir Alfred Harman Warren died on 1 August 1927 at the age of 71.[1]
