Solstad was born on a farm in [Bygland Township](/source/Bygland_Township%2C_Polk_County%2C_Minnesota), [Polk County, Minnesota](/source/Polk_County%2C_Minnesota). He lived in [Fisher, Minnesota](/source/Fisher%2C_Minnesota), was a cattle farmer and was involved with the insurance business. Solstad served in the [Minnesota Senate](/source/Minnesota_Senate) from 1935 to 1946.
