# Alfred Merriweather

**Alfred Musgrave Merriweather** [CBE](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire), (19 August 1918 – 8 October 1999)[1] was a Scottish missionary in [Botswana](/source/Botswana), who was a member of the [National Assembly of Botswana](/source/National_Assembly_of_Botswana) and its first [Speaker](/source/List_of_speakers_of_the_National_Assembly_of_Botswana).[2] He helped improve [public health](/source/Public_health) in Botswana.[3]

## Biography

Merriweather was born in [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire), and lived later in Glasgow.[1]

He moved to Molepolole in [Bechuanaland Protectorate](/source/Bechuanaland_Protectorate) in 1944 to work in the [Scottish Livingstone Hospital](/source/Scottish_Livingstone_Hospital). His medical reputation allowed him to become medical adviser to Sir [Seretse Khama](/source/Seretse_Khama), first [President of Botswana](/source/President_of_Botswana). Merriweather was elected as the speaker of the Legislative Assembly, and as the first speaker of the National Assembly when Botswana became independent.

He gained a PhD in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1956.[4]

He died in Molepolole in 1999.[1]
