**Alfred Henry Lewis** (January 20, 1855 – December 23, 1914) was an American [investigative journalist](/source/Investigative_journalist), [lawyer](/source/Lawyer), [novelist](/source/Novelist), [editor](/source/Editor), and [short story](/source/Short_story) writer,[1] who sometimes published under the pseudonym **Dan Quin**.[2]

## Career

Lewis began as a [staff writer](/source/Staff_writer) at the *[Chicago Times](/source/Chicago_Times)*, and eventually became editor of the *[Chicago Times-Herald](/source/Chicago_Times-Herald)*.[3] By the late 19th century he was writing [muckraker](/source/Muckraker) articles for *[Cosmopolitan](/source/Cosmopolitan_(magazine))*. As an investigative journalist, Lewis wrote extensively about [corruption](/source/Political_corruption) in New York politics.[3] In 1901 he published a biography of [Richard Croker](/source/Richard_Croker) (1843–1922), a leading figure in the corrupt [political machine](/source/Political_machine) known as [Tammany Hall](/source/Tammany_Hall), which exercised a great deal of control over New York politics from the 1790s to the 1960s.

As a writer of [genre fiction](/source/Genre_fiction), his most successful works were [Westerns](/source/Western_fiction) from his *Wolfville* series, which he continued writing until he died of [gastrointestinal disease](/source/Gastrointestinal_disease) at his home in Manhattan on December 23, 1914.[1] He was buried at [Woodlawn Cemetery](/source/Woodlawn_Cemetery_(Bronx%2C_New_York)) in The Bronx.[4]
