==Early life==
Henry was born on 28 April 1890 at [Warialda, New South Wales](/source/Warialda%2C_New_South_Wales). He was the son of Ada Emily ({{nee|Stephen}}) and Thomas Henry James, a doctor.<ref name=nsw>{{cite NSW Parliament |title = Mr Alfred Stephen Henry |id=1501 |former=Yes |accessdate=13 May 2019}}</ref>

Henry moved to [Grafton](/source/Grafton%2C_New_South_Wales) with his family at the age of five. His brothers included Olympic swimmer [Ernest Henry](/source/Ernest_Henry_(swimmer)) and aviator [Goya Henry](/source/Goya_Henry). ==Career==
Henry served his articles of clerkship with Frank McGuren in Grafton. He was admitted to practise as a solicitor in 1917 and established his own practice in Sydney in 1919. During World War I he served as a private with the 15th Field Ambulance of the [Australian Imperial Force](/source/First_Australian_Imperial_Force).<ref name=nsw/>

Henry was elected to the [New South Wales Legislative Assembly](/source/New_South_Wales_Legislative_Assembly) at the [1931 Clarence state by-election](/source/1931_Clarence_state_by-election), retaining the seat for the [Country Party](/source/Australian_Country_Party) following the death of [Alfred Pollack](/source/Alfred_Pollack). He was re-elected at the [1932](/source/1932_New_South_Wales_state_election) and [1935 New South Wales state election](/source/1935_New_South_Wales_state_election)s, but was defeated by fellow Country Party candidate [Cecil Wingfield](/source/Cecil_Wingfield) in 1938 after the party endorsed multiple candidates.<ref name=nsw/>

==Personal life==

Henry was killed in a motor vehicle accident on 27 September 1938, when a vehicle in which he was a passenger overturned on the [Pacific Highway](/source/Pacific_Highway_(Australia)) outside of [Stroud, New South Wales](/source/Stroud%2C_New_South_Wales). He was thrown out of the car and crushed to death underneath it, while the driver Thomas Watt received minor injuries.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/17523064|title=Mr. A.
