En route to the final, the Engineers did not concede a goal and defeated [Hitchin](/source/Hitchin_F.C.) 5–0, [Hampstead Heathens](/source/Hampstead_Heathens_F.C.) 3–0 and [Crystal Palace](/source/Crystal_Palace_F.C._(1861)) 3–0 (after a goalless draw). Although the Engineers entered [the final](/source/1872_FA_Cup_Final), played at [Kennington Oval](/source/Kennington_Oval) on 16 March 1872, as "favourites to win the trophy",<ref>{{cite book |last= Gibbons|first= Philip|title= Association Football in Victorian England – A History of the Game from 1863 to 1900|year= 2001|publisher= Upfront Publishing|pages=34–36 |isbn= 1-84426-035-6}}</ref> their opponents, the [Wanderers](/source/Wanderers_F.C.), won the match 1–0.

England won the match 4–2. In its report on the match, the ''Glasgow Herald'' (Monday, 10 March 1873) noted that "the back play of A G Goodwyn ... was faultless".

In 1874, Goodwyn was posted back to India with his regiment, where he died, at [Roorkee](/source/Roorkee), on 14 March 1874 (the day after his 24th birthday) as a result of injuries suffered two days earlier in a horse riding accident and ironically on the same day as the [1874 FA Cup Final](/source/1874_FA_Cup_Final) where his colleagues were defeated 2–0 by [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University_A.F.C.).<ref>The Early FA Cup Finals and the Southern Amateurs, a Who's Who and Match Facts 1872 to 1883, pp. 42, 81</ref> He was the first England international footballer to die.
