# Alfred Fitchett

**Alfred Robertson Fitchett** (1836 – 19 April 1929)[1] was the [Dean of Dunedin](/source/St._Paul's_Cathedral,_Dunedin)[2] from 1894 until 1929.[3]

Born in [Grantham](/source/Grantham), [Lincolnshire](/source/Lincolnshire), England, in 1836,[4] Fitchett was [ordained](/source/Ordained) in 1879, and graduated [MA](/source/Master_of_Arts) from the [University of Otago](/source/University_of_Otago) in 1882.[5] He was [Vicar](/source/Vicar) of [All Saints' Church, Dunedin](/source/All_Saints'_Church,_Dunedin) for 49 years, he continued at All Saints as well as being [Dean](/source/Dean_(religion)): he was also [Archdeacon](/source/Archdeacon) of [Dunedin](/source/Dunedin) from 1915 to 1919.

In the [1928 King's Birthday Honours](/source/1928_Birthday_Honours_(New_Zealand)), Fitchett was appointed a [Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George](/source/Companion_of_the_Order_of_St_Michael_and_St_George).[6] He died in Dunedin on 19 April 1929,[7] and was buried in the [Dunedin Northern Cemetery](/source/Dunedin_Northern_Cemetery).[8]

His son, [William Fitchett](/source/William_Fitchett), was [Bishop of Dunedin](/source/Bishop_of_Dunedin) from 1934 to 1952.[9] His daughter, [Margaret Fitchett](/source/Margaret_Fitchett), was an artist.
