# Alfred Buckley

**Alfred Buckley** (13 October 1829 – 15 December 1900) was an [English](/source/English_people) first-class [cricketer](/source/Cricket).

The son of the politician [Edward Pery Buckley](/source/Edward_Pery_Buckley), he was born in October 1829 at the family home New Hall at [Bodenham, Wiltshire](/source/Bodenham). He was educated at [Eton College](/source/Eton_College), before going to [Trinity College, Cambridge](/source/Trinity_College,_Cambridge).[1] Buckley played [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) for the [Marylebone Cricket Club](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club) on two occasions, playing against [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) on both occasions at [Fenner's](/source/Fenner's) and [Lord's](/source/Lord's) in 1851 and 1852 respectively,[2] though without success as he scored just 11 runs across his two matches.[3] He played alongside his brother, [Duncombe](/source/Duncombe_Buckley), in both matches. He was appointed a [deputy lieutenant](/source/Deputy_lieutenant) for [Wiltshire](/source/Wiltshire) in April 1867.[4] Buckley was employed in [The Admiralty](/source/Admiralty_(United_Kingdom)#The_Admiralty) and served as the secretary to the [Duke of Somerset](/source/Duke_of_Somerset). Other positions included his roles as chairman of the [Salisbury Infirmary](/source/Salisbury_Infirmary) for 13 years and chairman of the [Wilts and Dorset Banking Company](/source/Wilts_and_Dorset_Banking_Company) from 1888. He was also a [justice of the peace](/source/Justice_of_the_peace#England_and_Wales) for Wiltshire.[1] Buckley died at New Hall in December 1900, following a serious illness which had afflicted him for three months prior.[5] He was survived by his wife.[6]
