# Alfons Freij

**Alfons Freij** (born February 12, 2006) is a Swedish professional [ice hockey](/source/Ice_hockey) player who is a [defenseman](/source/Defenceman) for [Timrå IK](/source/Timr%C3%A5_IK) of the [Swedish Hockey League](/source/Swedish_Hockey_League) (SHL) on loan from the [Winnipeg Jets](/source/Winnipeg_Jets) of the [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League) (NHL). He was selected in the second round, 37th overall, by the Jets in the [2024 NHL entry draft](/source/2024_NHL_entry_draft).

## Playing career

Freij played youth and junior hockey in the [Sölvesborgs IK](/source/S%C3%B6lvesborgs_IK) system, and also played at times for [Olofströms IK](/source/Olofstr%C3%B6ms_IK) and [Karlskrona HK](/source/Karlskrona_HK). At 16, he moved to the [Växjö Lakers](/source/V%C3%A4xj%C3%B6_Lakers), where he played three seasons at the [J20 Nationell](/source/J20_Nationell) level.[1] In the 2023–24 season, he recorded 14 goals and 33 points in 40 games. Following the season, Freij was selected 37th overall, in the second round of the [2024 NHL entry draft](/source/2024_NHL_entry_draft) by the [Winnipeg Jets](/source/Winnipeg_Jets), their first selection of the draft.[2]

For the [2024–25 season](/source/2024%E2%80%9325_HockeyAllsvenskan_season), Freij was loaned by the Lakers to [IF Björklöven](/source/IF_Bj%C3%B6rkl%C3%B6ven) of the [HockeyAllsvenskan](/source/HockeyAllsvenskan), the second tier of professional hockey in Sweden.[3]

After a lone season in the Allsvenskan, Freij was signed to a two-year contract with [Timrå IK](/source/Timr%C3%A5_IK) of the SHL, on April 18, 2025.[4] He was later signed to a three-year, entry-level contract with draft club, the Winnipeg Jets of the NHL, however would continue on loan with Timrå IK on June 15, 2025.[5]

## International play

At the [2024 World U18 Championship](/source/2024_IIHF_World_U18_Championships), Freij was the top scoring defender on the bronze-winning [Team Sweden](/source/Sweden_men's_national_under-18_ice_hockey_team) with six points in seven games.[6][7]

In December 2025, he was selected to represent [Sweden](/source/Sweden_men's_national_junior_ice_hockey_team) at the [2026 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships](/source/2026_World_Junior_Ice_Hockey_Championships).[8] He recorded seven assists in seven games and won a gold medal. This was Sweden's first gold medal at the [IIHF World Junior Championship](/source/IIHF_World_Junior_Championship) since [2012](/source/2012_World_Junior_Ice_Hockey_Championships).[9]
