# Alexei Trader

Archbishop **Alexei (Trader)**,[1][2] or **Alexis**,[3] [secular name](/source/Secular_name) **John Trader** (born January 31, 1965) is the Archbishop of the [Orthodox Church in America](/source/Orthodox_Church_in_America) [Diocese of Alaska](/source/Orthodox_Church_in_America_Diocese_of_Alaska) since 2022.[4]

## Early life and education

Alexei was born on February 24, 1965, as John Trader in [Dover, Delaware](/source/Dover,_Delaware).[5] He was raised [Methodist](/source/Methodist); his grandfather was a Methodist pastor. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in [chemistry](/source/Chemistry) from [Franklin & Marshall College](/source/Franklin_%26_Marshall_College) and a masters in religion from the [University of Chicago](/source/University_of_Chicago). He also obtained a masters of divinity at [Saint Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary](/source/Saint_Tikhon's_Orthodox_Theological_Seminary) and a doctorate in patristic studies and psychology from the [University of Thessaloniki](/source/University_of_Thessaloniki).[4][6][7]

In 1990, Alexei joined Saint Tikhon's Orthodox Monastery as a [rasophore](/source/Degrees_of_Eastern_Orthodox_monasticism#Rasophore), where he also taught courses. In 1995, he went to Greece in [Mount Athos](/source/Mount_Athos) to [Karakallou Monastery](/source/Karakallou_Monastery), where he was also known as Alexios Karakallinos (Greek: Αλέξιος Καρακαλλινός).[8] In 1996, he was ordained to the [diaconate](/source/Diaconate), to the [priesthood](/source/Hieromonk) in 2001[6]

## Bishop

In 2018, Alexei was called back from Greece on invitation from [Metropolitan Tikhon](/source/Tikhon_Mollard) in order to serve as bishop. On November 12, 2019, he was elected Bishop of Bethesda, an [auxiliary](/source/Auxiliary_bishop) to Metropolitan Tikhon. On January 25, 2020 at [Saint Nicholas Cathedral](/source/St._Nicholas_Cathedral_(Washington,_D.C.)) in Washington, DC, he was ordained bishop.[9]

He was elected Bishop of Sitka and Alaska on March 15, 2022, and enthroned on March 27, 2022, at Saint Innocent Cathedral in [Anchorage](/source/Anchorage).[3][4][6]

He was elevated to the rank of Archbishop on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at a meeting of the Holy Synod.[10]

Alexei publicly met with the [Russian president](/source/President_of_Russia) [Vladimir Putin](/source/Vladimir_Putin) on August 15, 2025 as part of the latter's visit to [Fort Richardson National Cemetery](/source/Fort_Richardson_National_Cemetery) to pay respects at the graves of Soviet soldiers buried there.[11]
