**Alexei Barsov** (born 3 April 1966) is an Uzbek [chess grandmaster](/source/Chess_grandmaster).

## Chess career

Barsov, lawyer by education, has been a professional chess player since the early 1990s, and is one of the premier players in Uzbekistan. For some years he was the coach of the former [FIDE world champion](/source/World_Chess_Championship) [Rustam Kasimdzhanov](/source/Rustam_Kasimdzhanov).

He won the [Zeeland Open](/source/Vlissingen_chess_tournament) in [Vlissingen](/source/Vlissingen) in 1995.[1] Barsov's victories in Oxford (1998) and York (1999, together with [Tiger Hillarp Persson](/source/Tiger_Hillarp_Persson) and [Julian Hodgson](/source/Julian_Hodgson)) rate among his most prominent successes in international chess tournaments. In 2001 he won the [Hastings International Chess Congress](/source/Hastings_International_Chess_Congress) together with [Harikrishna](/source/Pendyala_Harikrishna) and [Sasikiran](/source/Krishnan_Sasikiran). Barsov competed in the [FIDE World Chess Championship 2004](/source/FIDE_World_Chess_Championship_2004), losing in the first round to [Alexander Beliavsky](/source/Alexander_Beliavsky). He won a tournament in [Saint-Quentin](/source/Saint-Quentin%2C_Aisne) 2004, and Casablanca 2005. Barsov won the [Uzbekistani Chess Championship](/source/Uzbekistani_Chess_Championship) in 2006 and 2010. In 2011, he came first in the 4th [Beirut](/source/Beirut) Open tournament.[2] In the following year, Barsov tied for first place with [Semetey Tologontegin](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Semetey_Tologontegin&action=edit&redlink=1) at the 2nd Central Asia Chess Cup in [Bishkek](/source/Bishkek)[3] winning the tournament on tiebreak score.[4]

Barsov represented Uzbekistan at the [Chess Olympiads](/source/Chess_Olympiad) in [Istanbul 2000](/source/34th_Chess_Olympiad), [Calvià 2004](/source/36th_Chess_Olympiad), [Turin 2006](/source/37th_Chess_Olympiad), [Dresden 2008](/source/38th_Chess_Olympiad) and [Khanty-Mansiysk 2010](/source/39th_Chess_Olympiad).[5] He has played for several European chess clubs, including the ones competing in the German [Chess Bundesliga](/source/Chess_Bundesliga).
