## Biography

Born in [Malanje](/source/Malanje) on 1 March 1925,[2] do Nascimento studied at the [seminaries](/source/Seminary) in Banglas, Malanje, and [Luanda](/source/Luanda) before travelling to Rome in 1948 to study at the [Pontifical Gregorian University](/source/Pontifical_Gregorian_University), from where he obtained his [baccalaureate in philosophy](/source/Bachelor_of_Philosophy) and his [licentiate in theology](/source/Licentiate_of_Sacred_Theology). He was [ordained](/source/Holy_orders) to the priesthood by [Archbishop Luigi Traglia](/source/Luigi_Traglia) on 20 December 1952, and then taught [dogmatic theology](/source/Dogmatic_theology) at the Luanda seminary and served as [chief editor](/source/Editing) of the Catholic newspaper *O apostolado* ("The apostolate") until 1956, whence he became [preacher](/source/Preacher) of the cathedral.

In 1961, with the outbreak of the [War of Independence](/source/Angolan_War_of_Independence), Nascimento was forced to enter [exile](/source/Exile) in Lisbon. Whilst in Portugal, he did [pastoral](/source/Parish_(Catholic_Church)) work, served as a [counselor](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/counselor) to the Movement of Teams of Our Lady, and studied [civil law](/source/Civil_law_(common_law)) at the Classical University. Upon returning to [Angola](/source/Angola) in 1971, he taught [moral theology](/source/Ethics_in_religion) at the Pius XII Institute of Social Sciences, and served as an official of the [archdiocesan](/source/Diocese) [curia](/source/Curia_(Roman_Catholic_Church)) of [Lubango](/source/Lubango), [secretary general](/source/Secretary_general) of the Angolan [Cáritas](/source/Caritas_(charity)), and special assistant to students and former [political prisoners](/source/Political_prisoner).

On 10 August 1975, Nascimento was appointed the fourth [bishop of Malanje](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Malanje) by [Pope Paul VI](/source/Pope_Paul_VI). He received his [episcopal consecration](/source/Bishop_(Catholic_Church)) on the following 31 August from Archbishop Giovanni De Andrea, with Archbishops Manuel Nunes Gabriel and Eduardo Muaca serving as [co-consecrators](/source/Consecrator). Nascimento was [vice-president](/source/Vice-president) of the Angolan [Episcopal Conference](/source/Episcopal_Conference) from 1975 to 1981, and was named the third [Archbishop of Lubango](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Lubango) on 3 February 1977. Archbishop do Nascimento was kidnapped by [guerrillas](/source/Guerrilla_warfare) during a pastoral visit on 15 October 1982; he was later freed on 16 November of that same year after [Pope John Paul II](/source/Pope_John_Paul_II) made an appeal for his release.

John Paul II created him [Cardinal-Priest](/source/Cardinal_(Catholicism)#Cardinal_priests) of [S. Marco in Agro Laurentino](/source/San_Marco_Evangelista_in_Agro_Laurentino) in the [consistory](/source/Papal_consistory) of 2 February 1983. He preached the [Lenten](/source/Lent) [spiritual exercises](/source/Spiritual_practice) for the Pope and members of the [Roman Curia](/source/Roman_Curia) in 1984. He was appointed the thirty-fourth [Archbishop of Luanda](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Luanda) on 16 February 1986 and resigned this post on 23 January 2001.[3]

Nascimento was unable to participate in the [2005 papal conclave](/source/2005_papal_conclave) because he had just turned 80. He became the oldest living member of the [College of Cardinals](/source/College_of_Cardinals) upon the death of Cardinal [Jozef Tomko](/source/Jozef_Tomko) on 8 August 2022.[4] He is also tied for longest-serving Cardinal with [Michael Michai Kitbunchu](/source/Michael_Michai_Kitbunchu), both of whom were appointed in 1983.

On 4 June 2015, he made his profession in the [Priestly Fraternities of Saint Dominic](/source/Third_Order_of_Saint_Dominic) to the Promoter for the Laity of the [Order of Preachers](/source/Order_of_Preachers), Rui Carlos Antunes e Almeida Lopes.[5]

Nascimento died on 28 September 2024, at the age of 99.[6]
