He won two Olympic gold medals, as well as three other Olympic medals.[1] ## Early and personal life Lippmann was born in Paris, France, in the [17th arrondissement](/source/17th_arrondissement). Through his mother, Marie-Alexandrine-Henriette Dumas, he was the grandson of [Alexandre Dumas *fils*](/source/Alexandre_Dumas_fils) and great-grandson of French writer [Alexandre Dumas](/source/Alexandre_Dumas), author of *[The Three Musketeers](/source/The_Three_Musketeers)*.[2][3] His father was Jewish.[4][5][6][7] Lippmann was also a genre painter.[2] ## Fencing career In 1909, he won the French épée championship.[2] He won five medals, including two [gold medals](/source/Gold_medal), at three different Olympic Games: a team gold and an individual silver in the [1908 Olympics](/source/1908_Olympics) in London at 26 years of age, a team bronze and individual silver in the [1920 Olympics](/source/1920_Olympics) in Antwerp at 38 years of age, and a team gold in the [1924 Olympics](/source/1924_Summer_Olympics) in Paris at the age of 42.[8][2][9][10][5][11] He missed out on the opportunity to fence in two other Olympic Games.
