# Alexandra Beukes

**Alexandra Jennifer Beukes** is a South African politician who served as a Member of Parliament in the [National Assembly](/source/National_Assembly_of_South_Africa) from June 2019 until May 2024. Prior to serving in the National Assembly, she was a Member of the [Northern Cape Provincial Legislature](/source/Northern_Cape_Provincial_Legislature) and the mayor of the [Khâi-Ma Local Municipality](/source/Kh%C3%A2i-Ma_Local_Municipality). Beukes is a member of the [African National Congress](/source/African_National_Congress).

## Political career

Beukes is a member of the [African National Congress](/source/African_National_Congress). Prior to her election to the [Northern Cape Provincial Legislature](/source/Northern_Cape_Provincial_Legislature), Beukes served as the mayor of the [Khâi-Ma Local Municipality](/source/Kh%C3%A2i-Ma_Local_Municipality).[1] She was elected to the provincial legislature in the [April 2009 provincial election](/source/2009_South_African_general_election).[2] Beukes was re-elected as an MPL in [May 2014](/source/2014_South_African_general_election).[3]

On 10 May 2017, premier [Sylvia Lucas](/source/Sylvia_Lucas) appointed Beukes as the [Member of the Executive Council](/source/Member_of_the_Executive_Council) (MEC) for Transport, Safety and Liaison, succeeding [Pauline Williams](/source/Pauline_Williams).[4] She was sworn in as an MEC the next day.[5] Due to disapproval from the ANC, Lucas rescinded her decision on 1 June 2017.[6]

## Parliamentary career

Prior to the [2019 South African general election](/source/2019_South_African_general_election) held on 8 May, Beukes was given the 118th position on the ANC's national list of candidates.[7] She was not elected. However, Beukes entered parliament on 12 June 2019 as a replacement for [Siyabonga Cwele](/source/Siyabonga_Cwele).[8] She was given her committee assignments later that month.[7]

For the [2024 South African general election](/source/2024_South_African_general_election), Beukes was given the 185th position on the ANC's [national list of candidates](/source/Party_lists_for_the_2024_South_African_election#National_5). She was not re-elected.[9]
