'''Alexander von Hartmann''' (11 December 1890 – 26 January 1943) was a German general in the [Wehrmacht](/source/Wehrmacht) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II) who commanded the [71st Infantry Division](/source/71st_Infantry_Division_(Wehrmacht)).  He was a recipient of the [Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross](/source/Knight's_Cross_of_the_Iron_Cross) of [Nazi Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany). Hartmann was killed on 26 January 1943 during the [Battle of Stalingrad](/source/Battle_of_Stalingrad) and was posthumously promoted to [General of the Infantry](/source/General_of_the_Infantry_(Germany)).

Before his death Hartmann stated, "I intend to go to my infantry in the front line...I will seek death among their ranks.  Captivity for a general is dishonourable."  He was killed instantly when he was shot in the head while standing upright on the [railway embankment](/source/rail_transport_in_the_Soviet_Union) firing "shot after shot from his rifle."{{sfn|Adam|Ruhle|2015|pp=180–182, 195, 198}}
