Competing in three [Winter Olympics](/source/Winter_Olympics), he won a gold medal in the four-man event with teammates [Harald Czudaj](/source/Harald_Czudaj), [Karsten Brannasch](/source/Karsten_Brannasch) and [Olaf Hampel](/source/Olaf_Hampel) at [Lillehammer](/source/Lillehammer) in [1994](/source/1994_Winter_Olympics).

Szelig also won three medals in the four-man event at the [FIBT World Championships](/source/FIBT_World_Championships) with one silver ([1990](/source/FIBT_World_Championships_1990) for [East Germany](/source/East_Germany)) and two bronzes ([1991](/source/FIBT_World_Championships_1991), [1995](/source/FIBT_World_Championships_1995), both for [Germany](/source/Germany)).
